Questions of Chapter One

This document contains 5 questions and their solutions regarding fluid properties such as density, specific gravity, weight, pressure, and temperature. Q1 calculates the specific weight, density, and specific gravity of oil given its volume and weight. Q2 finds the weight of a rock given its volume and specific gravity. Q3 determines the density, specific volume, and specific gravity of gasoline given its weight per unit volume. Q4 calculates various properties of an object like weight in Newtons, mass in kg, and acceleration rates. Q5 finds the density, specific weight, and specific volume of oxygen at a given pressure and temperature, and calculates the resulting pressure if temperature is reduced.

Questions of Chapter 1

Q1) A quart of SAE 30 oil at 68 weighs about 1.85 lb. calculate the oil's specific weight,
mass density, and specific gravity?

Solution:
1
= = 0.3342 ft 3
(4)(7.48)
W 1.85
= = =55.4 lb/ft 3
V 0.03342
55.4
= = = 1.72 slugs/ft 3
32.2
55.4
s.g. = = = 0.888
2 4 62.4

Q2) The volume of a rock is found to be 0.00015 m3. If the rock's specific gravity is 2.60,
what is its weight?

Solution:

=(2.60)(9.79)=25.5 KN/m3
=(25.5)(0.00015)=0.00382 KN or 3.82 N

Q3) A certain gasoline weighs 46.5 lb/ft3. What are its mass density, specific volume, and
specific gravity?

Solution:
46.5
= = = 1.44 slugs/ft 3
32.2
1 1
= = =0.694 ft 3 /slug
1.44
1.44
s.g. = =0.742
1.94
Q4) The weight of a body is 100 lb. determine (a) its weight in newtons, (b) its mass in
kilograms, and (c) the rate of acceleration in [ft/s2] and in [m/s2] if a net force of 50 lb is
applied to the body.
() = (100)(4.448) = 444.8
() = = 444.8 = ()(9.81) = 45.34
45.34
() = = 3.108
14.59
= 50 = 3.108 = 16.09 / 2 = (16.09)(0.3048) = 4.904 / 2

Q5) {a} calculate the density, specific weight, and specific volume of oxygen at 20 and
40 kPa abs. {b} if the oxygen is enclosed in a rigid container, what will be the pressure if
the temperature is reduced to -100 ?

Solution:
(40)(1000)
() = = = 0.525/3
[(260)(20 + 273)]
1 1
= = (0.525)(9.81) = 5.15 /3 = = 0.525 = 1.90 3 /
