5th Grade Life Science Classification Lesson

This document provides details for a 5th grade life science lesson on animal classification. Students will work in pairs to research and create a PowerPoint presentation defining invertebrates and vertebrates, and sorting vertebrates into groups. The presentation will include images, characteristics, and examples for each classification. Students will assess their learning through a short quiz and their completed presentations.

Lesson Idea Name: Classifications
Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 5th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms using scientific
classification procedures.

1. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and
invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and
mammal) using data from multiple sources.

Technology Standard Addressed:

6. Creative Communicator

Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the
platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals. Students:

1. communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital
objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will work in pairs to research what an invertebrate and vertebrate is.
They will find characteristic about each classification by researching on Nettrekker. For the vertebrates,
students will give the group names and what is a unique characteristic about these groups with an example.
The teacher will be more of a guide for the students to make sure they are doing the right thing. The project
will be introduced by talking about animals and what they are (mammals, birds, etc.). This project should take
45 minutes to an hour including researching, creating PowerPoint including images and descriptions, and
recording their own voices.
Students learning will be assessed by a short quiz. Because students have done their own research, they
should be able to receive a good grade. There PowerPoint will be included in this grade as well. The
PowerPoint should include an image, a characteristic, and an example on each slide. The final product will be
used in three different ways to help students. The first way, students will be hearing the information directly,
the second way, students will be able to go back and listen to their own voices and lastly, students will have a
hard copy that will be printed out into a book that they will be able to read at their desk. For an extension,

students will be able to go out into the environment and find these different animals and spot out the
different features and take pictures. The lesson will be concluded by doing like a 20 questions kind of game to
see if they are able to guess the classification. I will provide feedback to my students by having a peer meeting
and individual meeting with my students. I will also give my students a survey to see how the peer groups
worked.
