Nuclear Physics Calculations and Concepts

1. Calculate the electric quadrupole moment of a deformed nucleus with A=200 and Z=80, given its surface equation and uniform density inside. 2. Find the RMS radii of the lowest s-state and d-state wave functions for an infinite 3D harmonic oscillator potential well with hbar*omega = 15 MeV. 3. Calculate the s-wave phase shift of a neutron scattered by an attractive or repulsive potential well of depth/height V0 and width W.

Tutorial-4 :PH305

1. The surface of a deformed nucleus is given by the equation

x2 + y 2 + 1.2z 2 = R2 (1)

where R = 1.2A1/3 fm. Calculate the electric quadrupole moment classically if A = 200, Z = 80
and the nuclear density is uniform inside and zero outside the surface.
2. For an infinite three dimensional harmonic oscillator potential well with oscillator frequency , the
radial wave functions for the lowest s-state and the lowest d-state are, respectively,
1 2 4 1 2
R1s (r) = 2 3/4 1/4 e 2 r R1d (r) = 7/4 1/4 r2 e 2 r (2)
15
where the oscillator length parameter = M /h and M is the mass of a nucleon. Find the RMS
radii in each of the states taking h = 15 MeV.
3. Calculate the s-wave (l = 0) phase shift of a neutron scattered by (i) an attactive (ii) a repulsive
potential well of depth/height V0 and width W .
4. Show that the angular distribution of an s-wave scattering is isotropic. Assuming that in a hypo-
thetical scattering of a neutron, the only non-zero phase shifts are for the s and p-waves only, such
that 0 = 45 and 1 = 30 . Find the angular distributions of the scattering cross section if the
scattering takes place with laboratory energy 5 MeV.
