Plagiarism Case Study: Justice in Action

A student is suspected of plagiarizing another student's term paper. When the teacher checks their papers using Turnitin, it finds a 90% similarity between the plagiarizer's and plagiarizee's papers. The plagiarizee provides evidence that they wrote their own paper and that the plagiarizer had asked for a copy of the paper. In a meeting with both students and the teacher, the plagiarizer eventually confesses. According to school policy, plagiarism results in an automatic zero for the assignment.

Situation: A student is suspected for plagiarizing a term paper (4-8 mins)

1) Distributive Justice: Equal distribution of resources to students (Rubric, project guidelines, time)
2) Retributive Justice: Plagiarism = automatically a 0 (F) in that assignment (according to MUIDS
student handbook)
3) Corrective Justice: The plagiarizee who originally got a 0 for the term paper, got her original
score (the one that she supposed to get) and plagiarizer , got a 0 for copying.
4) Procedural Justice: Make sure the trial for the student is fair & proceeded according to the
school rule , the teacher listen to the plagiarizee who ask for justice, but still judge fairly with
both parties present (not biased)

Roles:
1) Teacher (Bee)
2) The Plagiarizer (Pin)
3) The person that got his/her paper plagiarized - Inging
4) Narrator - Jean

Narrator: The end of quarter one is coming up, and along with multitudes of tests, there are many
projects and papers that the teacher assigned. One of them, of course, is the term paper on justice.

Teacher: Heyyy students, for the end of this quarter we will be doing a two thousand words essay about
justice.

Narrator: The teacher continues to describe the specifics of the term paper and informs the class about
the severity of plagiarism with the big red warning sign, stating that plagiarism is grounds for an
automatic zero.

Teacher: //hands out the project guidelines and rubric to EVERYONE// distributive justice?

Narrator: As time passes, students worked hard for the essay and also for the preparation of the exam,
but alas, time is unforgiving and thus the students ran out of them. Right now, there are only 3 days
before the assignment is due.
Narrator: The student went to the teacher, asking whether if she could hand in the term paper later,
specifically, in the next week, in order to finish up the other work.

Plagiarizer: Teacherrrrrrrrrrrr can I have more time please? I have too much work, three essays, a big
model and a video, five lab reports and an AP exam coming up. I wont be able to finish your work by the
deadline for sure.

Teacher: No, if I allow you to hand in the paper late, then I have to give the others the same chance too.
This project must be fair and none of the students should have more time to work on it than another. This
coincides with the distributive justice that we are learning about, right?
Plagiarizer: Then could it be extended for everyone? Everyone would benefit this way and thus have a
chance to perfect their essays. No one would have more privileges than the others too!

Teacher: Im sorry, Pin, but this assignment was given to you three weeks ago, and some other students
have already finished the assignment. If I allow that to happen, it wouldnt be fair for your friends.

Plagiarizer: Okay.[ pouty face :-( ]

Narrator: The student began panicking as this is the last class to work on the essay.

Teacher: Okay class, as discussed, today is the deadline for our term paper, please submit your paper
through turnitin.com this is the class code. I wont receive any papers that were submitted after 9 pm.
Class dismissed.

Narrator: Time passed by, as students submitted their essays. The next class...

Teacher: Hello class, today we would learn about the court system. By the way, Inging, please stay after
class, I need to talk to you.

Plagiarizee:

Narrator: It turns out that one of the students copied the other students essay, and the website Turnitin
has detected this horrid action.

Teacher: Now, Inging, It seems like Turnitin had detected Plagiarism. Your work has 90% similarity to
one of your friends work. Now, you have a zero for your term paper, which brings you down to an F. Do
you have any explanation?

Plagiarizee: What!? How could it be? I did the essay by myself..

Teacher: Well, Turnitin doesnt say so.

Plagiarizee: Wait!! I remember that Pin had asked me to email my work to her because she needs an
example.

Teacher: Inging, do you have any proof? You cant just accuse your friend like that.

Plagiarizee: I even have the message that she sent me, asking for the paper. I still remember it. She asked
me not long after you had given us the assignment.

Teacher: Can you show me that message?

Plagiarizee: Yeah, [look through phone and hand it to the teacher] here it is.

Teacher: [look at the phone for a while] This is two weeks ago. Please call Pin, I want to hear the
explanation from both parties before making any changes.

Narrator: The teacher called upon the student to come.

Plagiarizer: Hello? You need to talk to me?

Teacher: Yes, about your papers, there are similarities between you two, according to MUIDS student
handbook, I need to know who is the plagiarizer and give that person zero for the assignment. Do you
have anything to say?

Plagiarizer: I didnt do it, the only plagiarizer here is her! Not me! I did a lot of social science club,
research and capstone. This Justice paper is way too easy. Why would I need to plagiarise? Dont you
believe my ability to do this work?

Plagiarizee: //stares at Pin// Pin.please tell the truth. Theres no need to make excuses. //looking sad//
The teacher already has seen the prove, I showed her the message you sent.

Narrator: The plagarizer continues to brush her fault off, but after the teachers intimidation and the
shown evidence on the email, she finally confesses.

Teacher: Do you have any proof that you did it yourself then, Pin? The only proof I have right now is the
proof that shows your fault.

Plagiarizer: .Well, I have to confess, I did plagiarise, and I am so sorry for that, I hope youll
understand. I really couldnt finish it, and you didnt extend the time for me. I have no choice.

Teacher: I have explained the reason to you why I couldnt extend the deadline. For fairness, everyone
has the same amount of time, and same grading standard, I gave you the rubric a month ago. I really have
to give you zero on this assignment.

Plagiarizee: Wait, teacher Does that mean I will get a zero too? I am not the plagiarizer here, and my
score was ruined. Isnt this unfair according to corrective justice?

Teacher: For your case, with the evidence it seems like you werent the one who plagiarise, so I will
change zero to your actual grade on Powerschool tonight. Now you both are dismissed.
Plagiarizee: Thank you, Teacher. See you in the class.

Teacher: Alright, have a nice day.

Plagiarizer: Wait! I see your point, but since I have realized my mistake, could you give me another
chance pleaseeee, Ill write a new one.

Teacher: I appreciate your apology but, just like what one should do to the retributive justice system, it
seems like I have to give you a zero on this assignment.

Plagiarizer: Wait? A zero? Thats too cruel, couldnt you help me a little bit? My parents are going to
kill me for this.

Teacher: Im sorry but rules are rules, the penalty is stated clearly in the student handbook. Its the school
policy.

Plagiarizer: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Teacher: //Looks at her watch// Oh my! It seems like I have a meeting to attend. See you soon Pin. //pat
Pins shoulder and walk out//

Plagiarizer: //runs after the teacher// Wait! Teacherrrrrrr

Narrator: Procedure has been followed, The penalty has been placed, the grades have been corrected. At
last, the plagarizer got a zero and student with her work being copied has received the score she
deserves.
Indeed, the procedure has been progressed fairly, and thus this case does have procedural justice.
