Tutorial 1 Motion in One Dimension: A A B B A

This document contains 4 physics questions about motion in one dimension. Question 1 asks about the minimum speed needed to travel a total distance of 300 km by 11:15 AM if starting at 8 AM and driving at varying speeds for the first 140 km. Question 2 provides a graph of speed vs height for a ball tossed upward and asks for the initial speed. Question 3 asks how far a runner travels based on their velocity-time graph over 16 seconds. Question 4 gives the position and acceleration equations for two particles and asks for their matching velocity when their speeds are equal.

Tutorial 1

Motion in One Dimension

Q1. You are required to reach a destination at a distance of 300 km at 11:15 A.M. You
start at 8 AM and drive at a speed of 100 Km/h for the first 100 km, then at 40 km/h
for next 40 km. What would be the least speed needed for the rest of the trip to arrive
on time?

Q2. The following figure shows the speed v versus height y of a ball tossed directly
upward, along a y axis. Distance d is 0.40 m. The speed at height yA is vA . The speed
at height yB is (1/3) vB . What is speed vA ?

Q3.How far does the runner whose velocitytime graph is shown in figure below
travel in 16s? The figures vertical scaling is set by vs=8.0 m/s.

Q4. Two particles move along an x-axis. The position of particle 1 is given by x= 6t2
+ 3t + 2 ( x in meters and t seconds); the acceleration of particle 2 is given by a= -
8t (a in meters per second squared and t seconds) and, at t= 0, its velocity is 20 m/s.
When the velocities of the particles match, what is their velocity?
