UNIT – I
1. a) Remove the wordy phrases, clichés, repetitions, vague expressions etc. and rewrite the
following sentences to make them direct, precise and effective. 5x1= 5M
1. Our company has made significant profit this year. (Abstract)
2. If you give me this opportunity to serve your organization, I promise I will leave
no stone unturned. (cliché)
3. He again made another attack. (repetition)
4. Any worker who flouts the company rules will lose his increment.

5. A computer performs several important functions, which includes performing fast
and accurate calculations. (Wordy)
b) Read the following personal and subjective paragraph and make it impersonal and
objective by avoiding personal pronouns and by using passive voice if necessary. 5M

We know that microscopes and telescopes are devices that we can use to magnify
something. We can use a microscope to magnify the size of objects that are very small
and we really cannot see them by the naked eye, such as bacteria and cells. On the
other hand, we can use a telescope to “bring nearer” very distant objects such as
ships, or the moon, the planets, and the stars.

b) Draw a bar graph showing the growth of deposits in the National Bank and
Universal Bank during the years 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07. Invent the necessary

3. a) Write a short paragraph on the topic – “Televisions and films are responsible for the
increased violence in the world today. 5M

b) Rearrange the following sentences in proper order to form a coherent paragraph.


Ordinary steel contains 0.06% to 0.12% of carbon. 5M
a) Stainless steel contains chromium and the steel used in making permanent
magnets contains cobalt.
b) This small quantity of carbon turns iron, which in its pure state is soft, into hard
and elastic steel.
c) Besides these common varieties of steel there are others designed by the
metallurgists, which possess very special properties and answer very special
needs.
d) By the addition of elements other than carbons, we obtain steel adapted to
particular uses in technology.
e) The name steel refers to a large number of alloys of iron.

b) Compose a single paragraph of analysis from each of the following outlines. Use the

Topic Sentence: Team games should be encouraged on campus rather than individual
games.
Supporting details: teach the importance of team work – inculcate team spirit – play for
the good of the team rather than for individual glory – large number

7. The Director of Education is deeply concerned about the loss of reading habits among the
youth today. As the Education Officer, you have been asked to collect the data (Prepare a
questionnaire) from the University students and submit a report with recommendations.

8. You are the designs engineer in a bicycle manufacturing company. The
general manager has received a new design and a prototype bicycle from a
small engineering firm. He has asked you to test the new bicycle thoroughly
and send him a report. Write the report in the form of a letter. Given below is
the list of some of the features of the new bicycle. 10M
Cheaper – designed to carry more than one person – size reduced to make it lighter and
stronger – medium-sized wheels, to gain safety and stability and to reduce cost – hub
brakes instead of rim brakes – lamp and bell permanently fixed on the bicycle – low
crossbar – adjustable seat height.

UNIT - V

9. a) Imagine that you are the proprietor of Taurus Garments Ltd. Write a letter to the customer
who has made a complaint and demanded a refund of the money as the shirt become
frayed after the first wash. You don’t want to lose a customer; so make your letter frank
and polite, in order to retain his goodwill. 5M

b) The Clean Food Products Ltd., Kanpur has decided to provide Internet surfing facilities to
all its employees. As the Managing Director of this company, draft a memo to be
circulated among all the Divisional Heads containing the following details: The location,
number of computers to be made available, timings, and procedure for lodging
complaints if any. 5M

10. a) As the Personal Manager of a multinational firm, draft an e-mail to be sent to those
candidates who were not selected in the interview conducted few days before. 5M

b) A meeting of the Executive Committee of Swadeshi Cooperative Stores, Jaipur was held
at 4 p.m. on 7 September, 2009, at which the following business as transacted: Minutes of
the last meeting, Treasurer’s report, appointment of an additional accountant, raising of
annual subscription, any other matter.
Assume that you are the Secretary and write the minutes of this meeting. Invent the
necessary details. 5M
