Advanced Steel Girder Design Guide

The document provides details for a tutorial problem on the design of a welded plate girder with a span of 30 meters to support specified permanent and variable loading actions. It includes checking the cross section classification, bending moment and shear buckling resistances, and designing the bearing, intermediate, and load bearing stiffeners. Design guidance is provided from Eurocode standards on structural steel design.

Tutorial No.3
Q1 Welded plate girder shown in Figure below, is a simply supported
plate girder with a span of 30 m. The compression flange is
laterally restrained against lateral torsional buckling throughout the
span. For the loading specified below, design a transversely
stiffened plate girder in S275 steel.

Actions

Permanent actions: UDL gk = 25 kN/m

Point loads Gk = 200 kN

Variable actions: UDL qk = 40 kN/m

Point loads Qk = 450 kN
Partial factor for actions

Permanent actions: G = 1.35

Variable actions: Q = 1.50

(a) Assuming the size depth of web is 2000 x 15mm and 750 x 50
mm for flanges. Check the cross-section classification.

(b) Check the bending moment resistance and shear buckling

resistance.

(c) Design of bearing stiffener, intermediate transverse stiffeners

and load-bearing stiffener.

(d) Sketch the details of the plate girder including the arrangement
of the stiffeners.
