Aim: To study the focal length of a convex lens
Problem Statement: Does the thickness of lens affects the focal length?
Hypothesis: The thicker the lens, the shorter the focal length.
Variable:
(a) Manipulated : Thickness of the lens
(b) Responding : Focal length
(c) Fixed : Types of lens
Apparatus and material: Convex lens of different thickness, lens holder, ruler and white screen.
Procedure:
1. The apparatus was set up as shown in the diagram.
2. The lens was directed at a distant object.
3. The screen was adjusted until a sharp image formed on the screen.
4. The distance between the lens and the screen was measured.
5. The experiment was repeated using another convex lens with a different thickness.
Result:
Thickness of the lens Focal length(cm)
Thin
Moderate
Thick
Discussion:
The focal length of a convex lens depends on the thickness of the lens. A thin convex lens has a
longer focal length. A thick convex lens has a shorter focal length.
Hypothesis is accepted.
Conclusion:
The thicker the convex lens, the shorter the focal length.
