Science Olympiad 2017-2018 Try-Out Material

Physical Science: Optics and Potions and Poisons

Optics Study Guide
You will see a few questions on the following concepts:
1. Law of reflection: specular, diffuse
2. Refraction: index of refraction
3. Prism: deviation, dispersion
Use the following sites to help prepare for the questions:

Life Science: Herpetology and Anatomy/Physiology

Herpetology Study Guide

To prepare for Herpetology, you will create a mini-field guide of 4 different snake
species. You will be asked to identify which snake is shown in an image and answer
questions about the snake such as: taxonomy (class, order, family, genus),
anatomy/physiology of species, reproductive strategies, ecology, diet, habitat
characteristics, behavior, and conservation status.

The four snakes you will need to know are:

1. Genus: Ramphotyphlops Common Name: brahminy blind snake
2. Genus: Charina Common Name: rubber boa
3. Genus: Nerodia Common Name: water snakes
4. Genus: Crotalus Common Name: rattlesnakes

Anatomy/Physiology Study Guide

You will see a few questions on the Digestive System Only:
1. Structures and Functions of the Digestive System

Inquiry: Experimental Design

When given an experimental scenario you need to be able to identify the
independent variable, dependent variable, and what is kept constant.

Earth Science: Dynamic Planet - Plate Tectonics

The try-out test will focus only on the history of the theory of plate tectonics and the
key scientists involved in developing this theory. Study using the following site:

TRYOUT TEST TIPS

You may bring in 2 pieces of paper (8 x11) with notes on BOTH sides when
you take this test!
You will be asked to list which subject you prefer (life, physical, earth, or
inquiry) BUT your performance on the test subjects will be used to
determine some of your events.
Most students will participate in 2 test events and 1 build event
Be prepared to list your top 3 build events and top 3 test events at the try-out
The try-out test may take more than one hour so be prepared to stay until 5 if
necessary!
