Heating and Cooling Skid Prototype Overview

This document describes a prototype for a heating and cooling skid. It summarizes different existing systems for heating and cooling reactors during drug processing, including single fluid heat transfer systems, hot water systems, and hot oil systems. It then proposes a new refrigeration-based system to address issues with existing systems like waste of utilities during changeovers and lack of accurate temperature control. The new system would use a thermic fluid heated by an electrical heater and cooled by refrigerant, integrating heating and cooling into a single compact unit.

PROTOTYPE OF HEATING AND COOLING SKID

ABSTRACT:

Now a days to crystallization and distillation of drugs processed by using single fluid heat
transfer systems , hot water systems, heating and cooling systems and hot oil systems. In all the
systems the process is same, as they are going to heat or cool the reactor as required. In single fluid
heat transfer system, We using the Thermic fluid as the secondary utility and steam, cooling tower
water, brine, chilled brine as the primary utilities. The maximum and minimum temperature attained
by this process is 150C to -30 C respectively. We can also go for -70 C with liquid nitrogen but
here some difficulties are there. Here we heat or cool the thermic fluid by using the primary utilities
through heat exchanger. In hot water system we heat the fluid by using cooling tower water. The
maximum temperature attained in this process is 90C. Heating and cooling system operation is same
as that of single fluid heat transfer system but only difference is we couldnt maintain the reactor
temperature range accurately. As per the application type one can choose the systems.

All the systems mentioned above are involving more space consuming and heat losses from
the system, more utility header lines required near operating area, cross contamination of utility fluids,
utility changeover by operator, during change over utilities are wasted if drained due to mix-up, it
may cause thermal shocks due to sudden change in temperature, if gradual change over is not
practised, increases overall cost. Refrigeration is the present trend in cooling the products effectively.
By using refrigeration system we can cool the products for minimum temperature of -400 C. By using
some controls we can also maintain the temperature over certain period very accurately. So if we
implement the refrigeration system for cooling it will give better results for cooling than the systems
mentioned above. The oil which can be used as the secondary utility can be heated by electrical heater
and the same oil can be cooled by the refrigerant as a primary utility.
