ROANOKE, Va. At 6:45 a.m. a man shot a WDBJ news team during a live
interview at Bridgewater Plaza at Smith Mountain Lake.
The victims were Alison Parker, 24, and photojournalist Adam Ward, 27. They
were interviewing Vicki Gardner, executive director of the local chamber of
commerce, when they were attacked by the gunman.
Parker died from gunshot wounds to her head and chest, and Ward died from
shots to his head and torso. Gardner was shot in the back but was
immediately taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she is
currently being treated for her wounds.
WDBJ staff reviewed the footage and identified the shooter as 41-year-old
Vester Lee Flanagan II. Flanagan was a former employee at WDBJ7, known
on-air as Bryce Williams.
Shortly before 11 a.m., Roanoke City Police Department located Flanagans
2009 Ford Mustang at the Roanoke Regional Airport. Flanagan left the airport
in a rented Chevrolet Sonic.
Police pursued him going north on Interstate-81 with caution, given that he
was still armed. A state trooper spotted the car after it turned east on
Interstate-66 and tried to pull him over.
He refused to stop and sped away, said Sgt. Rick Garletts of the State
Police. A minute or two later, the car swerved off the road.
Flanagan was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to the
hospital, where he was pronounced dead two hours later.
At 8:23 a.m. after the shooting, Flanagan faxed ABC News headquarters a
23-page document about the incident. The investigators now have a copy of
it and will use it in the investigation.
We are still piecing together the timeline of events leading up to this
morning shooting, said Franklin County Sheriff Bill Overton.
The incident was ruled as a murder-suicide and the investigation is ongoing.
