Understanding Symbol Keys
All components generated by ISOGEN are defined by unique
symbol key referred to as SKEYS.
The Symbols Editor is supplied with CADWorx to allow users to
quickly alter existing re-definable ISOGEN symbol key shapes
(SKEYS) to meet their drawing annotation needs.
Intergraph 2014
Character Code
SKEYS are defined by a 4 character code. The first two characters
define the component type and the last two define the end type.
ISOGEN uses (**) to automatically assign predefined component
end-types. The (**) allows CADWorx to assign end-types as
predetermined by the CADWorx end connections and conditions.
ISOGEN component SKEYS allow default end-type definitions. In
some cases an SKEY with component type VG** can be VGFL.

Symbol Information
An identifier is the component type
An SKEY is a component symbol
Intergraph 2014
Piping Component File (PCF)
The PCF file contains the definition for each component of its
symbol and its associated end-types. ISOGEN uses this PCF
definition to generate the isometric plot.
Intergraph 2014
Spec Editor Configuration
By default the Identifier and the SKEY values will be blank. This
indicates that CADWorx will handle ISOGEN symbol assignment.
Intergraph 2014
End Type Overwrite
The CADWorx ISOGEN Properties dialog provides End
Connections and Conditions fields to allow users to overwrite the
SKEYS end-types at each end point.

Intergraph 2014
Non User Definable Symbols
The following symbol categories can not be redefined.
Elbows
Pulled Bends
Tees
Crosses
Intergraph 2014
Single Level Valves
These identifiers can be redefined by changing the common shape
that has been assigned to the SKEY.

Symbol Workflow
In the Library Explorer, select a component category or type
If necessary, preview the symbols in the library explorer tree
To customize the symbol, Select Symbol > New Symbol
Specify new SKEY name, if needed, copy graphics and choose spindle
Use the Edit Window to make changes to symbol
Predefined start, exit, and spindle points are displayed
A preview box displays the spindle and plotted isometric view
Draw the symbol with the line, rectangle, and circle buttons
To save the redefined symbols Export the XML file
The import option allows users to import other redefined symbols
For CADWorx isometrics use the Export ISOGEN Symbols option
The Export ISOGEN Symbols creates a ASCII file
Associate the ASCII symbols file with Isometric Styles using I-Configure
Create CADWorx isometrics using updated styles to see the results
Intergraph 2014
New Symbol Dialog Box
Specify a new SKEY name or overwrite existing SKEY
Specify the new SKEY Description as needed
The Original SKEY is a selection to choose the base symbol
Specify the associated Spindle SKEY if applicable
The spindle option will only be available for valves
Check Copy original symbol graphics as needed
Click OK

Questions
Intergraph 2014
Best Practice
If the default SKEY uses ** for end-type then the user defined
overwrite of that SKEY also has to use ** for the end-type.
Otherwise two symbols could be applied to the VG SKEY (e.g.
VGFL can be VG** or VGFL in the library)
User defined SKEY should not use the same SKEY already defined
under a different component type.
Intergraph 2014
New Symbol Points
By default a new symbol will have the following 3 points defined
Start Point
Spindle
End Point
Intergraph 2014
Tapping Points
Tap Points are needed for connectivity in the isometric drawing. As
a precaution it is recommended if you plan to connect CADWorx
components to this component type then always add tap points.
Intergraph 2014
Tapping Rules
The software allows you to place up to 9 tapping points according to
the following rules. No more than 3 tapping points can be:
On the vertical axis
To the left of the vertical axis
To the right of the vertical axis
On the horizontal axis
To the left of the horizontal axis
To the right of the horizontal axis
Warning: The Symbol Editor will not warn you if they are located incorrectly. The Symbol
Editor does not perform any rule-checking regarding tapping point placement.
Intergraph 2014
Insulation & Tracing
ISOGEN Option Switch 61 and 62 must be turned on for Insulation
and tracing to show on the isometric drawing :
Intergraph 2014
Properties Dialog
In the Library Explorer, right-click an SKEY and view the symbol
properties.
The property information for a system symbol is read-only and
cannot be modified. System symbols appear as black text in the
Library Explorer.
The property information for a redefined symbol can be modified.
Redefined symbols appear as blue text in the Library Explorer.

Symbol Library
Symbols can be saved to an XML library. If any customized symbols
exist in the imported symbol library, the component group and
component type labels display in blue text.

Intergraph 2014
Export ISOGEN Symbols
Symbols that you create with Symbol Editor must be exported to an
XML- or ASCII-based file. These symbol libraries can, in turn, be
imported into Symbol Editor so that individual symbols can be
modified and then saved. To use any symbols that you define in
Symbol Editor on an isometric drawing generated in a third party 3D
design tool, they must be exported to an ISOGEN ASCII symbol file.
