The activity involves 5-year-olds investigating which objects sink or float in a clear water bottle. The children will choose items to put in their water bottle and observe which stay on top and which sink to the bottom. They will then shake the bottle and see how the items move. The goal is for the children to learn that an object's weight affects whether it sinks or floats. The hands-on experiment allows for individual exploration and development of reasoning skills.

Learning Experience Activity

Name of Activity: Sink or float

Age: 5 year olds

Intended goal/s: Investigate what objects sink or float and

learn taught weight contributes.

Materials needed: A clear water bottle with some water, little

items (glitter, beads, bean, pennies, pomp pomp) and chart

Processes for preparation and introduction: Collect supplies a

while back. At beginning of the week have each student had the chance

to try sinking and floating at the water table. Explain to the children

today going to do your own sink and float experiment in water bottle. I

would chart the childrens guesses. The kids will pick things they would

want for their water bottle. The children will see object that stay on

top and others that go to the bottom. After the sink and float ask

children to shake bottle. They will explore by shaking some items still

float while sink and stay in place.

Teaching strategies: The teaching strategy used in this activity

was hand on. They fill their water bottle with items by themselves of

their choice. This experiment involves guessing. Explore what happens

when you shake bottle with items.

Explanation of developmental appropriateness: This activity in

particular overlaps with others in that help out in small motor

development, eye and hand coordination. Children are able to express

themselves individually. It helps child with reasoning and thinking.
