Why we can not curtail environmental policy for economic growth

Ackerman, Frank. "Your iPhone Causes China's Pollution." New Perspectives Quarterly 31.2

(2014): 103-05. Web.

This Journal makes a case for the reason china has such a large carbon footprint. As rich

countries like the United States outsource its manufacturing jobs to developing countries, they

also outsource their carbon emissions. China is making products that are bought and sold in

America. As they manufacture these products using coal-powered energy, their carbon footprint

increases. Whos fault does that make it? Americas. China is now in the process of moving away

from coal-power and plans on using renewable energy sources to power manufacturing.

Although it will take time to money to convert China to low-carbon energy, doing so will not

threaten the countrys pattern of economic growth. The main point of this article is that

emissions from low-income regions are for the benefit of high-income regions.

This article will help my paper by making a case for chinas large carbon footprint. Most

of it due to the sheer size of the country. Chinas emissions are actually Americas fault and the

only way to slow down emissions is to move to renewable energy sources. As the Trump

administration works to stop outsourcing while regressing environmental policy, we will soon

have the same pollution problem that china faces. Ultimately hurting our health-related quality of

life. If China can work to lower emissions while not stunting its economy, we can too.
The author of this article is a senior economist at Synapse Energy Economics. This article

gives facts towards Chinas emissions problem. It also explores the solutions the Chinese

government is working toward.

"An America First Energy Plan." The White House, The United States Government, 20 Jan.

2017. Web.

This article on the White House website highlights President Trumps plans for energy.

He wants to make america independent of for foreign oil and tap into the natural gas reserves

prevalent all around the U.S.. He also plans to eliminate environmental policies that restrict the

growth of our economy. One of his goals is to revive the dying coal industry. With this comes

responsibility to keep our environment clean. Trump plans to enact policies toward the

environment that do not hurt our economy.

This article will benefit my argument to keep environmental policy. Trumps plans are

nothing but harmful to the environment and our way of life. These natural gas reserves are in

locations like national parks and wildlife conservatories. Trumps plan to tap into American oil

will further deplete our resources and add to our emissions. What we need is funding for

renewable energy sources so that we can transition away from fossil fuels before our kids and

grandkids wont have any.

This is President Trumps plan for energy directly from the White House. Although

nothing is implemented yet, this is the direction our government would like to go.
Capelln-Prez, Iigo, Margarita Mediavilla, Carlos De Castro, scar Carpintero, and Luis

Javier Miguel. "Fossil fuel depletion and socio-economic scenarios: An integrated approach."

Energy 77 (2014): 641-66. Web.

This Journal shows fossil fuel depletion models with factors such as peak oil

consumption and population growth. It points out the need for renewable energy sources to take

the place of non-renewable energy sources on a large scale. Developing these energy sources

will take a long time and as of now are nowhere near the levels needed to take the place of fossil

fuels. Fossil fuel extraction has already hit its peak and although we have found areas untapped,

as demand rises, these non-renewable energy sources will be depleted in a matter of decades.

The models in this study are adjusted for future factors such as GDP Growth, population growth,

advancements in technology, and areas of untapped resources.

This study will give my paper the stats needed to make the claim for renewable energy

sources. These sources will need to substituted in the place of fossil fuels but as of now can not

because of a lack of technology. These technologies must be developed and exploited before

fossil fuels are depleted. This will make the case for conservation and slow implementation of

renewable resources. The economic constraints of developing these energies must be lifted

before it is too late.

This Scholarly journal was written by experts in technology, economics, and energy from

a university in Spain. The sources used within the journal are all from similar backgrounds. This

article is from 2015 so the data is relatively new

Eilperin, Juliet, and Steven Mufson. "Trump to Roll Back Obamas Climate, Water Rules

through Executive Action." The Washington Post, WP Company, 20 Feb. 2017. Web.

This non-academic source from The Washington Post gives us information on the

executive orders the Trump administration plans on giving to multiple environmental agencies.

These orders are set to derail the environmental policies set by the Obama administration purely

for economic growth. This is due to the GOP belief that climate change is a hoax. Trump

explains that policies over clean energy and water are a hinderance on our economy. Trump

plans on reducing policies over the coal industry to help the coal-miners who supported his

campaign.

This will benefit my paper by providing information to support and negate the counter

argument. That argument being the reason these policy changes are happening and how they will

benefit our economy. I will specifically look at the policy changes over the use of fossil fuels and

clean renewable energy. This article also explains the Trump administrations eagerness to

change Obamian policy to show disinvolvement. What the Trump administration lacks in

scientific data.

This article is written by two members of the post who specialize in both economic and

environmental policy. Direct quotes by President Trump are used to show his plans currently in

the implementation stage. The writers are not experts on pollution but rather economics and

energy. This article reverberates current policies and explains their upcoming changes.
"FACT SHEET: Overview of the Clean Power Plan." EPA, Environmental Protection Agency,

27 June 2016. Web.

This record on the EPA website shows the overview of the Clean Power Plan, enacted by

the Obama administration in 2015. The policy plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions,

specifically CO2, by the year 2030. This plan puts the United States at the forefront of the global

goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions. This article jots the benefits and implementation of the act.

It also gives information about the dangers of continued greenhouse gas emissions. This article

makes clear that the use of non-renewable energy is a direct cause of climate change.

This article will be beneficial to my paper for its facts about greenhouse gas emissions

and for its information regarding the implementation of environmental policy. President Trump

is already in the act of rescinding this policy and therefore hindering the global effort to stop

climate change. This article also gives facts toward the economic benefit of slowing down

greenhouse gas emissions. It makes clear the correlation between burning fossil fuels and climate

change.

This summary of the Clean Power Plan is on the EPA website and gives social and

economic benefits of clean power as well as the drawbacks from non-renewable energy. This

article gives accurate estimations of future progress if the policy is implemented to its fullest

potential.

"Global Climate Change: Effects." NASA, NASA, 16 June 2016. Web.

This article shows the future effects of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions.

In the near future we will see rising sea levels, agricultural problems, social and recreational

problems, etc. If we do not tackle this growing problem now, we will soon reach the point of no

return. CO2 emissions of risen by since the start of the industrial revolution.

This article will support my argument to keep environmental policy. This looks at the

outcome of continued use of fossil fuels and the effect it will have on our planet. Policies enacted

by former president Obama were going in the direction to mitigate this horribly realistic future.

Taking away these policies will make these facts a reality very soon.

This article is on the NASA website. It is safe to say this information was gathered by

experts in their fields.

Loris, Nicolas. "The Many Problems of the EPA's Clean Power Plan and Climate Regulations: A

Primer." The Heritage Foundation, N.p., n.d. Web.

This article makes clear the disadvantages of the Clean Power Plan. It makes the

argument that the plan will hardly make a change in rising global temperatures, and it will also

create job loss and economic inefficiency. Climate change is now an irreversible problem and

this policy will do nothing but hinder the economy and raise energy prices.

This article will help make a counter-argument for clean energy. This act is regarded as

Obamas biggest contribution to economic policy and this article says otherwise. These facts will

benefit Trumps argument to regress environmental policy for economic growth. What this
argument fails to mention is the fact that this plan sets the stage for the rest of the world to make

an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This article is written by an economist, specializing in energy, environmental and

regulatory issues. This is a counter-argument for a policy that looks good on paper but has

minimal, real life, global effects.

O'Callaghan, Jonathan. "China To Get Vertical Gardens In 2018 To Help Tackle Pollution."

IFLScience, IFLScience, 17 Feb. 2017. Web.

This article explores a new method to dealing with urban smog and CO2 emissions.

Vertical gardens, scaling the entire lengths of buildings, are a neat new way to promote

biodiversity and help absorb CO2 in the atmosphere. With the first two buildings going up in

Beijing, these will act as just one of the many efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This article will help my paper by showing just one of the projects to reduce CO2

emissions. The Global effort to reduce climate change is becoming stronger with America at its

forefront. Curtailing our policy will have a negative effect on the rest of the world. We as

Americans lead by example. What type of example would we be giving if we regressed acts such

as the Clean Power Plan. Restraining our environmental policies will have a chain reaction and

will halt the global effort. This is one of the reasons we must keep and continue making policies

to stop greenhouse gas emissions.

The author of this article writes frequently about technology. This is not a scholarly

article but it helps explore efforts being made by other countries to stop emissions made by fossil

fuels.

"Renewables Now Cheapest, But How To Enable Faster Renewable Energy Growth?"

CleanTechnica. N.p., 23 Jan. 2017. Web.

This Article shows that it is now cheaper to run electrical entities with renewable energy.

It also says that jobs in renewable energy in the U.S. are at more than 400,000 compared to coal

related Jobs at 70,000. Renewable energy is cheaper and creates more jobs. This message must

be spread.

This can help my paper by giving the advantages of clean energy. Moving to a

completely renewable energy grid is in sight and the only thing stopping it is the presidents goal

to be energy independent. If we focus on renewable energy rather than natural gas, a cleaner

future for ourselves and our environment will be in reach.

This article is written by an expert on solar energy who is also the chief editor of

CleanTechnica. This article gives direct quotes from world leaders who are working toward the

widespread use of renewable energy.

Richerzhagen, Carmen, and Imme Scholz. "Chinas Capacities for Mitigating Climate Change."

World Development 36.2 (2008): 308-24. Web.

This academic article explains the changes that China is trying to make toward its

environmental policy on energy and transportation. Although policies have been made, the

implementation has been unsuccessful. This is due to Chinas main interest in economic growth.

As the developing country works to grow its economy, its plan to reduce greenhouse gas

emissions is failing. This is because economic growth and command for energy are positively

correlated. You can not grow an economy and reduce emissions at the same time, no matter what

regulations are put in place. The article makes clear that china is the second largest emitter of

greenhouse gasses, behind the U.S.. They have now surpassed the U.S.

This study will help my paper by introducing the correlation between economic growth

and greenhouse gas emissions. China is trying to cut down on its emissions but can not, do to its

growing economy. Without policies toward fossil-fuel consumption, the U.S. will not only

deplete its resources, but also challenge its peoples health-related quality of life.

This article is written by German scientists, experts in climate change and emissions. It

gives scientific data and predictions for the future of china and the rest of the world. This article

was written in 2008 so I will have to check up on its information relative to now.
