Comics in High School Chemistry Class

This document discusses using comics as a teaching strategy in chemistry classes at the high school level. It argues that comics can integrate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. Comics allow readers to develop their imagination and reveal many facts at a glance. The document proposes having students actively engage with comics by thinking about them, discussing their meaning, and creating their own comics. It provides an example of a potential student project on water where students would create both a comic and documentary.

Comics as a teaching strategy in

Chemistry class of high school

Paraschou Thodoris, Geologist, Teacher of 4th Gymnasium of Chania, Greece

Why comics
Why comics
Comics could be successful in integrating cognitive processes with the
psychomotor domain because of the integration of visual, auditory and kinesthetic
learning modalities (Wright 1979).

Comics has the ability to make a point without the semantic ambiguities in the
written words (Horn, 1980)

It is a universal language that it allows readers to develop their imagination (Horn,

1980, Muse, 1984)

Using comics is effective because they are familiar, can exaggerate events and can
reveal many facts at a glance (Philippe, 1980)

Comics represent a form of art that has been promoted into an important visual
language, which influences the human sentiments and transmits messages using
symbols and pictures (Dalacosta et al, 2009)
Why comics
Active participant of students in the use of
comics encompasses students
a) thinking about the comics
b) discussing the meaning
c) creating their own comics

Comics drawing by the students would inspire

them to think about certain issues and expressed a
stance on the issue
