PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson:
ISTE Standard:
1. Creativity and innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative
products and
processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
Common Core Standard
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and
information.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.1.A
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational
structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer's purpose.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.5
With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as
needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to
produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others;
demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages
in a single sitting.
List the Learning Objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson. Use the
following format: Students will be able to
- Students will be able to
1. Know the significance of the life of Martin Luther King Jr.
2. Illustrate their own understanding of the Martin Luther King Jr. I Have A
Dream.
3. Demonstrate their own creative writing skills
4. Know how to revise and edit other students essays through Google
Docs
Describe how the objective is relevant to students lives.
- It is important for students to be creative and introduce their own ideas and
opinions into writing. Students should also be able to cite spelling and
grammatical errors in peer review. This will improve their own grammar and
spelling skills.
List the words relevant to the content area that you will either introduce
and/or review during your lesson.
- Peer Review, Martin Luther King Jr., I Have a Dream Speech, Google Docs.
List the materials you will need to teach the lesson.
- SMART Board, iPad, Laptops/Computers (for students), copies of I Have a
Dream Speech
ASSESSMENT
Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to
measure students level of understanding toward the learning objective(s)
prior to teaching the lesson.
- To test students understanding of the essay writing and peer review
processes, students will type a 1-2 page essay on the topic of their favorite
winter memory using Google Docs. Following the completion of their
essays, students will share their essays on Google Docs with an assigned
partner and will find and correct all grammatical and spelling errors they
can point out.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson pre-assessment. (if
applicable)
Is your pre-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?
Describe the timeline as to when you plan to administer the pre-
assessment?
(Recommended timeline is a minimum of two days prior to teaching your
lesson).
- The pre-assessment will be administered as the language arts assignment
for the class prior to going over the MLK Jr. speech.
Create and insert a table/chart/graph that shows the pre-assessment data
results. (if applicable)
Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.
Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have
demonstrated they know) will be used to design the lesson objectives,
instruction, and post-assessment.
- The students will have demonstrated that they know how to correctly
review and correct errors in their own and in their peers writings.
Students will also demonstrate their ability to type on and share their
essays through Google Docs.
Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment
you will use to measure students level of understanding toward the learning objectives after
teaching the lesson.
APPENDIX: Include a copy of a Key/Product (completed by you, the teacher) which
provides a model of the desired outcome.
Is your key included at the end of this lesson plan?
TECHNOLOGY
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to
incorporate into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.
- The Smart Board (for display purposes and guided practice), Google Docs
(for students essay writing and peer review), computers, and my (the
instructors) iPad (will be used for display purposes) will be incorporated into
the lesson.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to
meet the needs of all learners and accommodate differences in students
learning, culture, language, etc. * Be sure that these accommodations are
based on what you identified/described in your contextual information
(Task I).
- I will accommodate for all students IEP.
MANAGEMENT
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student
behavioral/developmental needs in order to keep students on task and actively engaged
throughout the lesson.
- As a call back for when attention drifts or the class gets too noisy, I will turn
off the lights and all students will close their mouths, set everything they
are holding down, and place a finger over their mouth. If off task behavior
continues, I will address the students individually without creating more of
a distraction. If students do not obey or stay on task, the essay will become
homework rather than in class work and a new lesson will be introduced.
LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
I Do
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome of
learning objectives)
Describe how you will activate student interest and present the learning
objective in an engaging way (this is your lesson opening).
- First, we will combine our social studies and language arts classes for this
lesson. Then, to draw more interest into the lesson and the speech, the
lesson will be administered the Thursday before Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
As a class, we will watch a short video on the importance and
accomplishments of MLK and, will watch his I Have a Dream Speech
either in the short video or in s YouTube video. Following the video(s), I will
ask the students to get into small groups and discuss all that they know
about MLK, either through prior knowledge or from what they saw in the
video. After a few minutes, we will come together as a class and have a
representative from each group come up to the Smart board and write
down some of the content their group discussed. This will draw them into
the importance of MLK and will lead directly into the purpose of the lesson,
the I Have a Dream Speech.
Describe how you will communicate (to students) how the objective is
relevant to their lives.
- The objective of the lesson is important to students because they should
have goals and dreams they wish to see come true in their lifetimes
(whether they are personal or world issue-related). The students also need
to know how to write and review. This will be important down the road in
everything they do, from future essay and research assignments, to writing
their own goals, expectations, resumes, etc.
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to
model/explain/demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of the
objective. (cite theories/theorists)
- We will use explicit instruction (Anita Archer) to model/explain/demonstrate
the skills required.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on
to guided practice.
- To start, as a class we will read through the I Have a Dream speech
projected on the Smart Board multiple times, reading through it once all the
way through, then breaking it down into four different parts, and finally re-
reading it as a whole. This, along with the short videos, will take one whole
class period. On the following day, we will review the parts of the speech
and go over its importance at the time and now. To ensure understanding,
students will break up into small groups to go over the main ideas of the
speech and its significance. In the Language Arts section, I will review how
to write an essay and how to check for grammatical errors (this is the pre-
assessment). Before we move onto the pre-assessment, students I will
make a list of the three things that should be included in an essay
(Introduction, Body, and Conclusion) along with non-examples. Students
will have to identify the correct items to be included. We will do the same
with what we should look for when reviewing a peers essay, including
spelling, punctuation, correct use of apostrophes, run-on-sentences. Before
moving into the We Do, I will put a one page essay on the smart board and
review it as the students follow along. For the last paragraph, the class will
raise their hand if the notice a mistake that needs to be corrected. If the
students have little to no difficulty, we will move on.
We Do
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to
practice the skills and content needed to meet the learning objective(s).
- In the We Do section, we will combine the social studies and language arts
lessons. In this section, I will put a copy of MLK Jrs speech on the smart
board with grammatical errors thrown in. As a class, we will correct the
speech, having students individually come up to the board and identify the
errors. If they correctly identify an error, as a class, we will correct it.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on to independent
practice.
- I will divide the class into groups of two-three and they will each be given
an essay that needs to be corrected. As a group, they will identify the
mistakes and, following completion, be given an answer key to see if there
are any mistakes they failed to correct.
You Do
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills
required by the lesson objectives? (this is the post-assessment)
- In this section, students will be asked to identify their own goals and
dreams, and, using MLKs speech as a guide, create their own I Have a
Dream speech. These goals/dreams can be personal or be based off issues
affecting the world today. This essay/speech will be done using Google
Docs. After they complete their essay, students will share their essay with
their assigned partner to have them peer review what they wrote. Following
the peer review, students will correct their essays based on what their
partner marked. After the final draft is complete, the students will be
guided through how to publish their essays on the class website.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of your post-assessment.
Is your BLANK COPY of the post-assessment included at the end of this
lesson plan?
Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective and any
skills/content that were taught in an interactive manner (whole/small
group, etc.).
- In small groups or on the class blog (mrdangallagher.blogger) students will
list their favorite accomplishment of MLK followed by three or four of the
goals from their essay.
ANALYZE
(This portion may only be done after the post assessment is
collected/scored.)
Describe the results of the Post-Assessment and be sure to address the following:
Students progress from pre-to-post assessment. (if applicable)
Factors that may have influenced the post assessment results.
How the results of the post assessment highlight what areas of the
lesson will require re-teaching (if any).
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph (below) that shows the post-assessment data
results. If you used the same document for both the pre and post assessments, it is strongly
encouraged that you show the comparison.
Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.
Description:
REFLECT
List and describe two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction
(successes).
List and describe two things you feel were challenges during the planning, implementation
and/or assessment of the lesson.
List and describe two ideas for redesign you would make if you were to teach this lesson
again.
Post Assessment
1.What were some of the circumstances going on
at the time of MLK Jr.s Speech?
2.Name two things that MLK dreamed about in
his speech.
3.Where did MLK issue his I have a dream
speech?
4.Circle the errors in the following paragraphs
and correct each one. (For the key, errors are
in bold)
.
Theyre are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied "
We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of
police brutality. we can never be satisfied as long as, our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of
travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We
cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from (add an <a>) smaller
ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are striped of their
self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: For Whites Only. We cannot be
satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he
has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until
"justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream."
