Introduction
I have sent the four of you to go down the hall and fetch something from the art room. As
you are all walking, your group comes across a door that you have never seen before. The door
seems very suspicious. Your group decides to open the door and investigate. It is dark inside the
door so you all walk inside. On the other side of the door, you are suddenly
outside in an unfamiliar place. When you turn around, you notice that the
door is gone, and the school is nowhere to be found. Upon walking around,
you notice in the sky of in the distance is what appears to be the American
Flag. However it is very different. It looks more like the British flag. It
appears you have traveled back in time! Are you in the United States? Or
Great Britain? You decide to walk towards the flag. You happen upon a
settlement! However it seems to be abandoned. It is time to search the camp grounds to find
some clues. It is time to find out where that mysterious door sent the four of you!

Tasks
You each will get the chance to lead a task and solve a clue. You will be working together to
solve clues to learn about where you are. You will be investigating the
location where you landed by learning about the people who lived there,
how they lived, and at what point in time they lived. You will each take on a
different role in the group in order to solve a number of clues. Among your
groups members, choose who will be the Navigator, the Translator, the
Gatherer, and the Leader. This assignment is worth 20 points!

Procedures
1. The class will be divided into groups of four. Once you are in your group of four, read the
jobs below and decide who will take on leading each task. Each of you should work
together to complete each task.
2. You will start out with the first clue. The leader of this clue will read the clue to the rest
of the group. Once the clue has been read, you will work together to solve the clue.
3. Once you think you have solved the clue, show your answer to your teacher. If you are
correct your teacher will hand you the next clue. If youre wrong, theyll tell you to try
again!
4. You will solve 3 clues. On the last clue, the leader will combine all of the clues to find the
final location through a quick Google search. Be sure to hold onto your answer sheet
during the entire Breakout for this last task!
5. Once you have completed the entire Breakout and solved the mystery of your location,
turn in your clues sheet to the designated area!

6. Once you have turned in all of your work, write a paragraph reflecting on what you have
learned. Write at least four new things you learned.

Jobs

Navigator: You have been assigned the role as the navigator of the group. Your goal is to figure
out the location within the United States of where you and your group have traveled in time. As
you are navigating, you run into torn up pieces of a map. You must put these pieces together to
help discover your current location. Once you have put your map together, you must take your
clue to the leader.

Translator: As the Translator, you will come upon a rock with different symbols on it that
appear to be Native America. Next to the rock you find a piece of paper with translations on it.
Using this paper, translate the symbols to figure out the writing on the rock. These writings will
help you to figure out what Native American tribe is close by which will help you figure out your
location.

Gatherer: While you are out looking for food in the land, you come across a journal. This
journal must belong to someone important! Coded inside of the journal is the name of its author.
Decode the name using the highlighted letters in his journal. Once you think you have figured
out the name, record it in the answer box and check your answer with your teacher to obtain your
next clue.

Leader: You have been assigned the role of leader. As the leader, your main job is to take all of
the information that your group has gathered and use your technology to plug it into Google.
You must figure out the year that we are in in order to get the lock unlocked.

Conclusion
As you finish this assignment, think about the conditions the colonists in Jamestown had to live
in. Think about the different resources they had to utilize in order to obtain food, water, shelter,
medicine and clothing. Also, think about the Native Americans who lived nearby. Do you think
they had a good relationship with the Natives? Or do you think there was a lot of fighting?
This was a very big project that you all completed! Be very proud of yourselves for solving this
puzzle! You had to use teamwork, and work with different organization skills to complete this
activity. You were also required to think outside the box and use your problem solving skills to
think of how you would solve each clue. Congratulations! Welcome back to the present!
