Objectives:
TSW sequence the
important events of a non-fiction text.

Lesson Plan:
 Introduction
(Anticipatory Set/Focus/Motivation):
TTW ask students if they can name a recipe and list the steps.
TSW state the recipe and begin listing the steps. For example, a student may know how to
make a grilled cheese. The steps would be:
-Get bread, butter, and cheese out.
-Put butter in the pan and heat it.
-Once the pan is heated, put butter on one side of the bread and place it buttered side
down in the pan.
-Put cheese on the piece of bread inside the pan.
-Put butter on one side of the other piece of bread and place it on the cheese buttered
side out.
-Flip the grilled cheese once the bottom piece of bread is brown.
-Flip the grilled cheese again once the bottom piece of bread is brown.
-Once cheese is melted and both sides of the grilled cheese are brown, place grilled
cheese on plate.
-Serve grilled cheese.
TTW ask students what would happen if you were making a recipe and you skipped one of
the steps.
TSW answer that if you skip a step then the recipe will not turn out correct.
TTW state that following a recipe is the same as following a sequence of events.

Information Giving
TTW state that the sequence of events is the order something happens in a story. When
reading a story, the cue words that you will listen for are:
-First
-Next
-Then
-Last/Finally
TTW give an example of how to plant a seed.
-First, I get my shovel, seeds, pot, and dirt.
-Next, I dig a hole and put the seeds in.
-Then, I water the seeds every day.
-Finally, I put the pot in the sun and watch the seeds grow.

Guided Practice:
TTW read a picture book to the class.
TTW label four flashcards:
-Title/Author
-Beginning
-Middle
-End
TTW ask the students what event happened first, writing their response on the first flash
card labeled beginning; follow steps for beginning, middle, and end.
TTW glue flash cards together with a piece of construction paper.

Independent
Practice:
TSW pick a picture book from the classroom library.
TSW read the story to themselves.
TSW follow steps to create their own beginning, middle, and end flash cards.

Assessment/Evaluation:
Informal assessment, walk around the room and observe understanding of sequence of
events as students write out their flashcards.
 Closure / Culminating
Activity:
TSW their work with a partner or to the class.

Enrichment/Extension:
TSW do Arthur Story Scramble on PBSKids.

Reteach:
Depending on the amount of students with misunderstanding, the teacher will pull small
groups and help the students in the area of need.

For a student who is an ELL or Tier 2, pull for small groups for extra support.
