FADE IN:
EXT. SMALL CIRCULAR STADIUM - DAY
A small fighting stadium on the edge of a city, with a crowd
of spectators watching.
TYRION, an intelligent, dwarf-sized mid 30s man who has been
accused of killing the late king, has chosen to have a trial
by combat.
OBERYN, a brave and confident man from a foreign city, is
representing Tyrion in the trial by combat, seeking revenge
against the man who has killed his sister.
Tyrion walks into the circular fighting stadium with his
hands tied and two guards following him. As he sees Oberyn:
TYRION
Looks like very light armour.
OBERYN
(confident)
I like to move around.
TYRION
(worried)
You should at least wear a helmet.
Oberyn walks to his wife's side, picks up a wine goblet and
starts sipping the wine.
TYRION (CONTD)
(trying to be helpful)
You shouldn't drink before a fight.
OBERYN
(sarcastic)
You learned this during your years
in the fighting pits? I always
drink before a fight.
TYRION
(serious and solemn)
It could get you killed. It could
get be killed.
OBERYN
(confident and reassuring)
Today is not the day I die.
2.
THE MOUNTAIN, a 7-foot, middle-aged man who is notorious for
being extremely strong and his tendences for excessive
violence, is Oberyn's opponent in the trial by combat. He is
large but not quick, and wears heavy armour. He previously
killed Oberyn's sister.
As The Mountain walks into the stadium:
OBERYN'S WIFE
You are going to fight that?
OBERYN
(confident and reassuring)
I am going to kill that.
OBERYN'S WIFE
(frightened and worried)
He's the biggest man I've ever
seen!
OBERYN
(confident and reassuring)
Size does not matter when you are
flat on your back.
MAESTER PYCELLE, an old man with white hair, wearing a brown
robe, is responsible for managing this trial by combat.
As a horn blows:
MAESTER PYCELLE
In the sight of gods and men, we
gather to ascertain the guilt or
innocence of this man, Tyrion
Lannister. May the Mother grant the
mercy, may the Father give them
such justice as they deserve, and
may the Warrior guide the hand of
their champion.
Oberyn hugs and kisses his wife, while The Mountain draws his
large sword.
OBERYN'S WIFE
(frightened and worried)
Don't leave me alone in this world.
OBERYN
(reassuring)
Never.
A servant tosses Oberyn his spear. In front of The Mountain,
Oberyn starts doing fancy flourishes with his spear, and the
crowd cheers.
3.
OBERYN (CONTD)
(confident and arrogant)
Have they told you who I am?
THE MOUNTAIN
(deep voice, confident)
Some dead man.
The Mountain charges as Oberyn, but Oberyn calmly dodges.
OBERYN
(calm and confident)
I am the brother of Elia Martell,
and do you know why I've come all
the way to this stinking pile of a
city? For you.
Oberyn swings his spear at The Mountain, but The Mountain
easily blocks. The Mountain then charges, but Oberyn calmly
dodges away again. They started circling each other around
the stadium, keeping distance from one another.
OBERYN (CONTD)
(calm and cocky)
I am going to hear you confess
before you die. You murdered my
sister and killed her children. Say
it now and we can make this quick.
The Mountain charges yet again, but Oberyn blocks the sword
and in return swings his spear, hitting the helmet off The
Mountain's head. The crowd cheers.
OBERYN (CONTD)
(calm)
Say it. You murdered her.
As The Mountain and Oberyn exchange a series of swings and
blocks:
OBERYN (CONTD)
(calm)
You killed her children.
Oberyn swiftly dodges The Mountain's sword, and the crowd
goes wild.
OBERYN (CONTD)
(angry)
You murdered her! You killed her
children!
4.
The Mountain kicks Oberyn, and Oberyn falls to the ground. He
quickly gets back up, but The Mountain's sword has snapped
his spear. A servant tosses him another spear, and they
continue to fight.
The Mountain pushes him to the ground again, and he again
quickly gets back up, this time sticking the spear into The
Mountains thigh. Oberyn dodges a few swings, then stabs The
Mountain in his calf.
As The Mountain shouts in pain and falls onto his knees:
OBERYN (CONTD)
(angry)
You murdered her! You slaughtered
her!
As he walks away from The Mountain's body, and then runs back
and stabs The Mountain in the stomach:
OBERYN (CONTD)
(cocky and confident)
You killed her children!
The Mountain is laid on his back against the floor.
OBERYN (CONTD)
You're dying. No, no, no, you can't
die yet, you haven't confessed.
Oberyn pulls the spear out of The Mountain's stomach and then
starts to circle around The Mountain's body.
OBERYN (CONTD)
(shouting, angry)
Say it. Say her name. Elia Martell.
You murdered her, you slaughtered
her, you killed her children.
Elia Martell. Who gave you the
order? Say her name!
As Oberyn is walking around him, The Mountain uses his hand
to trip Oberyn and grabs Oberyn by the neck. Blood pours from
Oberyn's mouth.
THE MOUNTAIN
(calm)
No.
The Mountain uses his remaining energy to flip himself over
so that Oberyn is now against the floor with The Mountain
over him.
5.
THE MOUNTAIN (CONTD)
(shouting, sarcastic)
Elia Martell. I killed her
children, and then I killed her.
And I smashed her head, like this!
Oberyn begins to shout for help, but The Mountain ruthlessly
punches Oberyn to death, crushing Oberyn's face. Oberyn's
wife starts to scream.
MAESTER PYCELLE
Gods have made their will known.
Tyrion Lannister, in the name of
King Tommen of the House Baratheon,
First of His Name, you are hereby
sentenced to death.
Tyrion is shocked as his jaw starts to drop.
