Estar
Both verbs mean to be, but have different uses.
Ser Estar
-Identity -Location
-Nationality/Origin -Emotions
-Characteristics of people/places/things -Health
-Time/date/season -Physical/mental states/conditions
-Generalizations -Certain weather expressions
-Possession -Ongoing actions (progressive)
-Profession/Occupation -Results of actions (past participles)
-Material of Composition (what somethings made of)
-Where events take place
Ser Estar
soy somos estoy estamos

Ser/Estar used with adjectives
-Ser is used with adjectives that describe expected or inherent qualities, wheras Estar is used
with adjectives to express temporary or variable qualities, or a change in appearance or
condition.
La casa es muy grande.
Ellos estn tan enojados.
-With most descriptive adjectives, either ser or estar can be used, but the meaning of each
statement will be different.
Adriana es alegre. Adriana is cheerful. (a cheerful person)
T ests alegre hoy. You are cheerful today. (feeling cheerful)
Manuel es guapo. Manuel is handsome. (a handsome person)
Manuel est guapo. Manuel is handsome. (looks handsome today)
Some adjectives have 2 different meanings depending on whether they are used with ser or estar:
