Why Communism is fundamentally at Odds With Christianity
Communism is a very popular system of governments because in its pure form, it appeals
to many people to be the solution to mans problem. For the Christian however, the fundamentals
of communism run against what Scripture teaches how the believer should live. Specifically, the
communist fundamentals are that mans problem is social injustice, that man should abolish
private property, and that man should worship the state.
First of all, pure communism offers a solution to a problem that doesnt even exist. It says
that mans problem is social injustice, but the Christian knows that mans problem is sin and a
heart of stone. Thus, the entire aim of communism does not offer a solution to the root problem
of mankind, and thus is destined to fail from the start. The Christian should know that the only
solution to a heart of stone is to be born again and given a heart of flesh.
Secondly, communism states that in order for the country to run efficiently, it needs to
abolish private property. This view though, is against what the Scripture holds and thus should
not be held by the believer. Throughout the Old Testament, the idea of ownership of land and
passing it down through the generations is held in an esteemed light. It is not a sin to own private
property, so long as the believer does not make it his idol. While Paul does encourage the church
to share its possessions, this is not an advocate for communism, in which no one can own
anything. Rather, he is emphasizing the fact that the church needs to tend to its own.
Finally, Communism teaches that man should depend solely on the state and sometimes it
goes so far as to say that man should worship the state. Surely, the believer can see why this is so
wrong. The first commandment clearly states that man is to have no other god besides God.
Aside from so blatantly violating this commandment, this goes against the theme of separation of
church and state that is held in the New Testament.
In conclusion, the fundamental principles of communism do not adhere to the teachings
held in Scripture. Pure communism believes that mans root problem is social injustice, that man
should abolish private property, and that man should worship the state. However, each of these
beliefs runs against the current of the Bible. However, should a believer by Gods will be placed
in a communist country, this does not mean that the Christian should organize a rebellion against
the government. Rather, he should pray for his leaders and render to Caesars what is Caesars.
