Steel Column Base Plate Design

1) This document provides calculations for the design of a column base plate connecting an HSS 6x6x0.3125 column to a 12x12x0.5 inch base plate using 4 0.5 inch bolts. 2) Key design checks are performed to ensure the base plate can resist the 4.3 kip shear force through friction and bearing, that welds are strong enough, and plate thicknesses are adequate. 3) All design checks for strength of welds, plate thickness, bearing pressure, and friction resistance are shown to pass requirements.
