The new year is off to a great start! We spent the first week back after Christmas talking about the new year and how
we could improve and be better friends and listeners in 2017. The students "toasted" to the new year by saying how
they could help out at school and home this year. Some decided they would be better helpers at clean up time, play
nicely with their school friends, and spend time with their families! This was a great way to review our classroom rules
and talk about feelings and manners in the new year!
Although we have not had much snow this year, we enjoyed a week about snowmen. We created many snowman
crafts using different type of media, shapes, and even with our feet! The kids participated in shape matching,
snowman measuring, rhyming, and paper cutting activities. Their favorite part was building a snowman out of butcher
paper and trash bags. They made their own "snowballs" and helped stuff and dress him.
We went on an Arctic Adventure during the middle of the month. We learned about animals that live in the polar
regions. We read books about penguins, polar bears, and snowy owls. We learned how these animals stay warm by
placing our hands into bowls full of ice water. One hand was in a bag of lard while the other went directly into the
freezing cold water. The kids we able to quickly tell the difference and learned how the fatty layer of skin on these
animals protects them and keeps them warm. The kids also examined and matched different animals to their tracks,
put together tangram animals, and matched numbers to create igloos.
For the last two weeks of the month we talked about animals in winter and hibernation. We read books, watched
videos and played games that taught us how different animals survive during the cold winter months. We had a
special guest, Avery Wilson's mom, visit our classroom to teach us more about animals in our area. We got to see and
touch a red fox skin, skunk skin, and a bear skin. She also brought along a few birds and real live Box Turtle. The
turtles were their favorite part!
We spent some time talking about Martin Luther King Jr. and how to be peaceful and kind to everyone. We also
celebrated the Year of The Rooster by reading books and making a rooster craft.
In addition to all of this we learned about the letters C, K, E, and H. Talked about the numbers 1-5 and the color Blue.
We have been spending a lot of time working on our names and have been busy counting and identifying numbers.
We have been staying active inside by doing yoga, gonoodle.com, Just Dance, playing with the parachute, and having
free play in Fellowship Hall. While we have lots to do to stay busy and active indoors, we are looking forward to some
warmer weather and getting outdoors!
