Final Exam Sheet 1

This document contains 5 hypotheses tests with their corresponding null and alternative hypotheses. Each test is identified as either one-tailed or two-tailed. The first test examines the average length of board meetings and is two-tailed. The second examines the proportion of car accidents on a specific road and is one-tailed left. The third compares academic performance between two student groups and is two-tailed. The fourth looks at average encoding time and is one-tailed right. The fifth analyzes the effect of a smoking policy on the number of smokers over years with a one-tailed left test.

Sheet 1

Direction: Formulate the Null Hypothesis (H0) and the Alternative Hypothesis (H1) of the
following research problem. Identify if the hypothesis test is one-tailed (left or right directional)
or two-tailed (non-directional).
1. A manager wants to know if the average length of time for board meetings is 3 hours.
H0: ALT = 3; the average length of time for board meetings is 3 hours.
H1: ALT 3; the average length of time for board meetings is not equal to 3 hours.
Two Tailed (non-directional)
2. The researchers wants to know if the proportion of car accidents in Balete Drive has
increase from 5% of the total car accidents recorded in Quezon City in a day.
H0: p = 5; Proportion of car accidents in Balete Drive has not increased the total car
accidents in Quezon City in a day.
H1: p > 5; Proportion of car accidents in Balete Drive has increased the total car
accidents in Quezon City in a day.
One Tailed Left directional
3. A teacher wants to know if there is a significant difference in the academic performance
between BSN and HRM students.
H0: BSN = HRM; There is no significant difference in the academic performance
between BSN and HRM students.
H1: BSN HRM; There is a significant difference in the academic performance between
BSN and HRM students.
Two Tailed (non-directional)
4. The registrar wants to know if the average encoding time is lower than 30 minutes.
H0: = 30; the average encoding time is 30 minutes.
H1: < 30; the average encoding time is lower than 30 minutes.
One Tailed Right directional
5. The Discipline Office wants to know if the new policy on smoking has reduced the
number of smokers this year than the previous year.
H0: P (this year) = P (last year); the new policy on smoking has equal number of smokers this year
and the previous year.
H1: P (this year) < P (last year); the new policy on smoking has reduced the number of smokers
this year than the previous year.
One Tailed Left directional
