Object: To demonstrate the working principle of Permanent Packer
Theory:
Permanent Packer
Permanent packers are those packers that cannot be entirely retrieved and reinstalled in the well.
This type of packer is normally run and run separately on electric cable or slick line, a work string
or tubing. Permanent packers have historically provided the advantage of deeper and more
accurate setting depths, larger internal diameters, and the ability to with stand larger differential
pressures.
Permanent packers are production packers designed for high pressure and/or high temperature
wells. Once these packers are set milling operations are required for retrieval.
Procedure/Mechanism:
Two types of permanent packers are:
1. Wireline set
2. Hydraulic set
1. Wireline set:
Wireline set permanent packers are generally run and installed using electric wireline.
When the setting depth is reached setting tools are activated from surface by electric
current to set the packer.
These packers may also be run on tubing using hydraulic setting tools, which are activated
by surface pump pressure to set the packers.
A locator sub and the seal assembly are attached to the bottom of the tubing and is stung
in the polished bore receptacle of the packer.
Isolation is achieved by the fit of seals inside the polished bore.
The polished seal bore packer is a permanent type or semi-permanent packer that can be
set with precision depth control on conductor wireline as shown in figure.
There is on important constraint with this packer is tubing remains in a place for a long
time at the same temperature and no movement occurs between the seals and the
polished bore, the seals may stick to the polished bore surface, creating a tubing
retrievable problem.
2. Hydraulic set:
Hydraulic set permanent packers are generally run on the bottom of the production
tubing.
When the required depth is reached pump pressure is applied to set the packer, which
features a setting piston as an integral part.
Using surface pump pressure to set either type of packer requires a means of plugging
the tubing at the hydraulic setting tool or below the hydraulic set permanent packer
before applying surface pump pressure.
Uses:
Permanent packers are especially useful where tubing temperature may vary widely
because the seals slide up and down in the polished bore.
They can be retrieved by using a special tool on the end of the tubing in place of the seal
assembly, but a round trip with the tubing is required.
