Types of Measurement Scales Explained

There are four types of measurement scales: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. Nominal scales assign labels to variables without quantitative value, like gender or eye color. Ordinal scales signify order but not precise differences, such as quality rankings. Interval scales indicate both order and exact differences, including temperature and time. Ratio scales identify, rank, and compare objects as well as intervals, including measurements of length, height, and weight.

There are four kinds of scales in measurement, they are: Nominal, Ordinal, Interval and Ratio.

Nominal: It is used for labeling variables without any quantitative value. When it is used for
identification, there is a strict one-to-one correspondence between the numbers and the objects.

i.e, 1) National Id. 2) Class roll. 3) Male/ female. 4) Jersey no. 5) Color of eyes. 6) Different types
of vitamins. 7) ZIP code. 8) Phone numbers. 9) IMEI number. 10) Platform number in a rail
station.
Ordinal: This scale signifies the order of values with importance but the differences between
each one is not really known.

i.e: 1) Quality ranking. 2) Team rank. 3) Socioeconomic class. 4) Defense rank. 5) Board stand in
ssc/hsc exam. 6) Selecting best player in ODI/TEST. 7) Selecting the richest person. 8) Quality
ranking. 9) Playing cards numbers. 10) Market position in terms of market share.
Interval: Interval scales are numeric scales in which we know not only the order, but also

the exact differences between the values.

i.e: 1) Temperature scale. 2) Time. 3) Date. 4) Currency. 5) Year. 6) Intelligence score. 7)
Personality measurement. 8) Sea level. 9) PH scale. 10) Measurement of happiness.

Ratio: It allows the researcher to identify or classify objects, rank order the objects and
compare intervals or differences.

i.e: 1) length. 2) Height. 3) Weight. 3) Income. 4) Age. 5) Market share. 6) Number of

customer. 7) Distance. 8) Income. 9) GDP. 10) Marks of a class.
