The Alluring World Of Maiko And Geiko

Tankosha 2016 ISBN 9784473040596 Acqn 26589
Pb 18x20cm 104pp 110ills 100col 18
Judith Clancy has lived in Kyoto since 1970, studying the Japanese tea ceremony and flower
arrangement, and becoming well-versed in the citys culture and history. In this book, she reveals
the beautiful and graceful realm of the maiko and geiko, for which Kyoto is especially famous.
These ornately decorated and kimono-clad young women are bound to the strict customs and
tacit rules of the lifestyle to which they are committed. Using thoughtful writing and numerous
photographs, Clancy documents every aspect of the history, talents and artistry, and conditions
and expectations of the maiko and geiko, as well as the recent changes this venerated tradition
has undergone.

Illustrated Encyclopedia 150 Years Of Japanese Uniforms

Seigensha Art Publishing 2016 ISBN 9784861524752 Acqn 26603
Pb 19x26cm 144pp 150col ills 28
If you understand the uniforms, you'll understand Japan. This text contains illustrations of 200
different uniforms, including public uniforms, private uniforms and school uniforms. Japanese
uniforms are born from a variety of origins, such as points of western influence that come with
modernization and elements of long-held Japanese tradition. Through these transitions, we can
see the "nature of Japanese people" taking shape. Having worked with uniform illustrations for
many years, Naoki Watanabe, reviewed an enormous volume of reference material and
photographs to provide illustrations and diagrams from multiple sources that include information
on historical background, functionality and more.

1:1:1 Documentaries In Print By Niessen & De Vries

Niessen & De Vries 2016 ISBN 9789082137743 Acqn 26710
Pb 22x33cm 200pp col ills 33
All nine issues of 1:1:1 gathered in one volume. Initiated by graphic designers Richard Niessen
and Esther de Vries, the series explores forms of expression in design and offset printing. The
starting point for each issue is an interview with an artist or designer that focuses on the
representation of his or her work. Eylem Aladogan, Metahaven, David Jablonowski, and Melanie
Bonajo are among those who were selected to participate. Rather than strive for maximum
legibility or a perfect reproduction, Niessen & de Vries transformed each issue into a distinct
portrait. An essay by Els Kuijpers examines communicative design in the broader context of the
production of meaning.
