FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Dear Parishioners,
Today we enter the season of Advent. However, with the days
becoming shorter, some people are entering the S.A.D. season. S.A.D.
stands for: Seasonal Affective Disorder, a lower mood caused by a lack of
sunlight. Physical sunlight has a vital part to play in human well-being.
However, we also need spiritual sunlight from God. God has revealed His light in Jesus Christ.
In the first reading today, the prophet Isaiah says, O House of Jacob, come, let us walk
in the light of the Lord. It is the promise of the light of God in Jesus Christ that inspired the
responsorial psalmist to say: I rejoiced when I heard them say, let us go to Gods house.
(Gods house of light). It is the light of Jesus Christs love and mercy for us that impelled St.
Peter to write in the second reading, The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon let
us arm ourselves and appear in the light.
The daylight has already dawned on human civilisation. God has revealed the promise
of His love for us in the fullest way. His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, was born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered and died on the cross, and rose again, now seated at the Fathers right hand
praying for us, encouraging us to experience the light of his own victory over death and sin.
We have a decision this Advent. We can stay SAD by pressing the snooze button in our
spiritual lives, and delay committing to a life of thanksgiving and praise for his promise of
salvation. Or we can do as Jesus says in the Gospel, and Stay awake, and Stand ready. Staying
awake and standing ready does not mean looking busy, like Martha in the kitchen. It means
being awake and ready in constantly giving him joyful thanks and praise for his promise of
the light of eternal salvation that he has already won for us.
Our joy in giving Jesus constant thanks and praise is Jesus only light that he has to
shine in the world. Our joy at St. John Vianney Church is Jesus hope for the salvation of the
world! There is an old saying that the Christian life involves one thing, and in this order: J.O.Y.
Jesus. Others. Yourself. Lets stay awake and stand ready to have J.O.Y. this Advent, and not
be S.A.D.

RCIA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
OF ADULTS:
The initial enquiry period (precatechumenate) for our parishs group of
enquirers will be moving into its second
stage this Saturday, 26th November at the
6pm Mass, with our unbaptised enquirers
celebrating the Rite of Acceptance into
the Order of Catechumens, and those
already baptized celebrating a Rite of
Welcome as candidates. The first phase of
the journey of initiation has been a time for
seekers to hear the mystery of God
proclaimed. The enquirers have consciously
and freely sought the living God and entered
the way of faith and conversion as the Holy
Spirit opens their hearts. We ask you please
to pray for the new catechumens and
candidates as they continue their
conversion journey. We, as a parish, will
journey with them as they discover what it
means to follow Christ as a Roman Catholic.
