FG SG HS Material

This document summarizes different types of cast iron materials used for core and neck materials in rolling mill work rolls. It describes the chemical composition and properties of standard flake iron (FG), high strength flake iron (HS), and spheroidal graphite iron or nodular iron (SG). FG has lower strength and hardness than HS and SG. SG has the highest strength, hardness, tensile strength, bending strength, and density. The document explains that these materials have sufficient strength and ductility for safe service life in rolling mill applications without neck breakages or spallings. It provides a table comparing the materials' wear resistance, strength, toughness, and neck surface properties.

Cast iron materials with a high carbon

content to allow precipitation of free
graphite in lamellar shape, or after
magnesium treatment nodular shape.
Both these type of core materials exhibit
sufficient strength and ductility to in each
application ensure a safe service life;
avoid spallings or neck breakages.
The microstructure consists of a
ferritic/pearlitic matrix with minor traces
of Cementite (Fe3C) but different forms
of free Graphite (Flake and Nodular).

Applications
Depending on the application and
strength requirements, core and neck
materials are combined with the various
shell materials of spun cast work rolls.
Both for the roughing and finishing stands
of conventional HSM, Compact strip mill,
Steckel mills and Plate mills.
