Arrival procedure
I will greet the students every day with a smile, a good morning, and a high or low five (it will be
random with each student to keep them on their little toes). They will then proceed to put up
their belongings in the designated area. They will then place their Owl on the Whos Here Today
Tree (outlined below). They will then place their homework in the homework drawer. Finally,
they will proceed to their seats and begin the bell ringer.
Taking attendance
For taking attendance I will have a designated board titled Whos Here Today? It will feature a
tree (which will change with the seasons) and underneath it laminated owls with each students
name. Students are to walk in and place their owl on the tree to indicate they are present for the
day. I will have the classroom leader of the day bring me any owls that remain on the ground
that indicate an absence.
Collecting Notes/Homework/Returning Papers
For notes and homework I will have a drawer located on my desk. Each morning students will,
as per the arrival procedure, place any homework in the drawer labelled homework.
Start of class routine
Before we go over the bell ringer I will perform a wake up activity with the students. An
example is one called Im Alive. Its very simple and a fun little activity. The script is as
follows:
Im Alive
Im Awake
Im Enthusiastic
You go through the script a total of 4 times. First you say a line and the students copy you. So,
for the line you say it very unenthusiastically. The second time you excitingly say Im alive and
unenthusiastically say the other two lines. The third time you say the first two lines excitingly
and the third line unenthusiastically. And finally you say all three lines excitingly.
Classroom transitions
I will keep a schedule of the day visible for my students so they can anticipate what is to come
next. For transitions I will do brain breaks to keep them alert and allow them to refocus. An
example is The Roller Coaster. This is an activity lead by me. The students stand up and we
pretend to be on a roller coaster. I will do certain motions, such as going up the hill, going down
a hill, turning, etc. and the students will have to follow suit.
Bathroom breaks
Bathroom breaks will be allowed during transitions. Yet only 2 students may go at a time, 1 boy
and 1 girl. Group bathroom breaks will be scheduled before any resource time, lunch, and
recess.
Replacing Pencils
I will supply all students with 2 mechanical pencils so students will not have to get up and
sharpen pencils. I will keep spare lead and erasers if the students need them. During the
classroom transitions, before we begin the next activity, I will have students check if they need
lead or an eraser and will supply them if needed.
Absences/Make up work
I will have students make up work prepared for them in a Ketchup Folder. It will be a folder
with a picture of ketchup on the front. I will have the folder on their desk the next day they
return. I will allow them one day for each day missed to make up their work. If they know they
will be absent, I will allow them to get the folder ahead of time. The same rules apply for
returning.
Classroom jobs
I will only have one job in my classroom. I will write the name of the leader on the board at the
beginning of the day. The classroom helper will be selected daily and will be based on
alphabetical order. They will be responsible for handing out papers, line leading, bringing
attendance to me, leading the pledge of allegiance, etc.
Classroom rules
The classroom rules will be an anagram of the word Smart and called the Smart Contract. I will
get a poster board that will have the following anagram:
Say please and thank you
Make friends and be thoughtful
Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to learn
Respect yourself and others
Try your best
I will have all the students sign the board and place it at the front of the classroom where the
students can see it.
First Day Script
For the first day I will be at the door to greet my students with a hello and a five. I will
ask them to find the desk where they will find an owl with their name on it. This will be their
assigned seat. Also on top of the desk they will find 2 mechanical pencils and a folder which
will contain pertinent information for them to take home.
I will then introduce myself to the class. I would tell them some background information
about me such as why I enjoy teaching and some of my hobbies. I would then have them take
out a piece of paper to do an ice breaker.
For an ice breaker I would hand out the students a piece of blank paper. I would then
have them write somethings about themselves and draw a self-portrait. I would then go around
the room and have the students share what they have written and drawn with the class. These
papers would then be passed to me which I will have copied to make a small book that I will pass
to the children at a later date for them to keep so they can better learn about their fellow students
Next I will then have the students open their folder and pull out their copy of the
classroom procedures. I would go over them with the students and model any procedure that
needs so. The procedures are as follows:
Arrival Procedure
Taking Attendance
Collecting Notes/Homework
Start of Class Routine
Classroom Transitions
Bathroom Breaks
Replacing Pencils
Absences/Make Up Work
Classroom Jobs
Classroom Rules
I would go over each procedure in detail and model as needed. For the first few weeks I will
review the procedures to help them learn the routine.
Next I would go over the classroom rules with the students which is as follows:
Say please and thank you
Make friends and be thoughtful
Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to learn
Respect yourself and others
Try your best
I will explain each letter to the students. After they understand the rules, I will have them come
up and sign the board and place it at the front of the class.
