Location Notes

John wakes up in his small bedroom after having a nightmare about his wife's death. He watches news about her and looks at a black mask. The bedroom represents John's lack of freedom due to the city's high crime and his psychological state. John then walks down an alleyway to relieve stress but sees crimes occurring. In the alleyway, a man confronts John and puts a gun to his head. The alleyway was chosen to depict the city and criminals in a negative light through its grungy aesthetic. It creates irony as John's first moment of freedom but also foreshadows the danger that will happen.

Bedroom
John Staples wakes up in his bedroom after having a nightmare about his wifes
death. He watches a news report about his wife. The scene continues when he rises
from his bed, checks his wardrobe and looks at a black mask. I chose my home
bedroom for a number of reasons the first being that it is very small, which
highlights the lack of freedom that John has. He lives in a city where there is a
significant rise in crime, but also he is psychologixally disturbed by his wifes death.
The small room best connotes his lack of freedom, as his psychological state and the
city he lives in is forcing him to be trapped with nowhere to go. As well as this, the
low-key lighting of the bedroom best describes Johns mind state through the use of
colours. Despite the entire short film being in a black and white filter, the low-key
lighting which supports this creates a dark atmosphere which portrays John as
miserable and depressed.

Alleyway
John takes the liberty of walking down the street to relieve his stress. As he
continues down the alleyway, he sees crimes happening around him, giving the
audience an insight into the extent of the citys crime. After ignoring them, he is then
confronted by a man with a duffel bag, who points a gun to his head. I had chosen
the alleyway because of the aesthetic look. Typically, alleyways are grungy, dirty and
filthy areas of a city, and I feel the look and vibe of an alleyway best perceives the
citys state and the criminals in a negative light, which is what I want. The use of an
alleyway creates an oxymoron to the audience, as it is the first sign of freedom for
John in the short film, however the grungy visual aesthetic paints a negative image
on the city, as well as foreshadowing what will happen moments from then.
