Charlie's intelligence is declining after the surgery on the mouse Algernon. He knows he is becoming dumber and does not want others to see him that way or pity him. He decides to move away so that no one knows he was once a genius but is now losing his intelligence again. Others see him as dumb like he was before, unable to read or write well. Charlie views himself as having had a gift that is now gone, but hopes he did something to help others who were like his former self.

(Due Tuesday November 8)

Directions: Please answer the following questions in FULL sentences.

Makes sure your answers are in a different color so that it is easy to


differentiate between the questions and answer. If a questions asks for
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE, please make sure you add a page #.

ELA STANDARDS:

the audience or reader (e.g., created through the use of dramatic irony)
create such effects as suspense or humor.
Review THIS PRESENTATION before you start reading. The story begins on
page 672, and part 1 ends on page 686. Part 1 is due on Tuesday November 8!

AFTER PROGRIS REPORT 3:


1. Why does Charlie say I never tell lies? What is he talking about?
The women said to make up a story on people in the pictures. Charlie said
that how can you tell stories about people who have never met before. He
thinks by doing this he is lying. He said, I never tell lies anymore because I
always get caught. Probably when he was younger he told lies to maybe
make him feel like he is smarter than he actually is, but he always got caught
in that lie or any lie.
2. What does this say about his personality and intelligence?
His intelligence is very low, but because of his intelligence being, so low. His
personality may be different than other people because of his IQ.
3. Who is Algernon?
Algernon is a mouse that they used to see how high his IQ is. They made him
play a game against the mouse and the mouse won every time. He also felt
really bad about himself that a mouse was beating him every time.

AFTER PROGRIS REPORT 4:

4. What were Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss arguing about?


They were arguing if they should use Charlie or not. Dr. Nemur said he is
worried about his safety. Dr. Strauss said that she recommends it.
5. Charlie will be the first human being to ever have something happen to
him. What is it?
He will be the first person to have their IQ tripled by surgery.

AFTER PROGRIS REPORT 5 & 6:


6. Dr. Strauss tells Charlie not to worry about the operation. What is his
reasoning for this?
He was worried because he superstitious and Dr. Strauss told him not to
worry about anything and that this is science. He was also worried about his
safety and he said that around him, but he did not want that to get in his
head and make him nervous about the operation.
7. Dr. Strauss wants Charlie to concentrate on what in his journal entries?
He wants him to write about what he thinks and what he is feeling at that
moment in time.

AFTER PROGRESS REPORT 7 & 8:


8. What is Charlies opinion of Algernon now? Why does it change?
He says that he hates the mouse now. It was after the operation and nothing
is happening, so he is getting angry because he thought that this would make
him smarter, but it is not doing anything. He is mad that the mouse is still
smarter than him.

9. Charlie says Joe and Frank are friends and they like him. What are Joe and
Frank really doing to Charlie?
They are making fun of Charlie because his IQ is lower than theirs. They are
using his name like, Joe really pulled a Charlie Gordon. Charlie does not
know what it means, but it means that they did something stupid or wrong.

10. What is a victory for Charlie?
He finally beat Algernon in a maze. He was super excited about that because
it is a sign that his IQ is getting better. He is getting smarter and smarter.

how she feels about Charlie?
She cares a lot about Charlie. When she heard the things that his friends
are saying, she felt bad because he did not know.

Pull a Charlie Gordon means to do something or say unintelligent or did
something wrong. Charlie is ashamed because he did not know that people
viewed him as a person who was unintelligent and dumb, but he thought his
friends liked him and wanted to be around him because of the person he is
despite his IQ. He was wrong.
