Name of the Invasion Game: Bench Ball

Stage: Stage 2

Explanation
Divide students into two even teams. Have each team nominate one peer to be a goal keeper. Goal keepers need to
stand on opposite ends of a nominated playing field. The rest of the team arrange themselves amongst their half, and
the teacher throws the ball into the centre of the court. Any player may try to gain possession, and once one does, they
need to throw the ball, over arm, to another player in their team. The aim of the game is to pass the ball to everyone in
your team, without dropping the ball or losing it to the other team. No throwing under arm, or throwing it out side of the
boundaries, or the opposite team gets the ball. After the ball is passed to every team member it can be passed to the
goal keeper and the team scores a point.
Game lasts approx. 20-30 minutes.
Why is this game important for this stage?
The game teaches students to form strategies under pressure
All students are involved, which forces all students to move and communicate with one another in order for the
ball to be passed to every student.
Students need to be attentive to what is going on around them passing the ball, moving into the attackers
space and watching where their defenders are.
The game will only work if players act as a team
Great preparation for other sports like netball
