PM10 Air Quality Monitoring Guidelines

This document provides guidelines for monitoring and analyzing particulate matter PM10 in ambient air using a high-volume air sampler. The sampler draws air through a size-selective inlet collecting particles less than 10 micrometers on a filter. The weight gain of the filter before and after sampling is used to calculate the PM10 concentration in micrograms per cubic meter by dividing the net weight gain by the sampled air volume. Quality control procedures include equipment maintenance, calibration, and analysis of field and lab blanks to ensure accurate measurement of PM10 levels.

1.

Purpose
The purpose of this protocos is to provide guidelines for monitoring and analysis of
Particulate Matter PM10 in ambient air.
2. Principle of the method
Air is drawn through a size selective inlet and through a 20.3X25.4 cm (8 X10 inch) filter at
flow rate, which wich is typically 1132 L/[Link] with aerodtynemic diagram less
then the cut point of inlet are collected, by the filter .The of these particles is determined by
the difference in filter weight prior to and after sampling .The concentration of PM10
disingnated size is calculated by dividing the weight gain of the filter by the volume of air
sampled
3.
Instrument
The following items are necessary to perform the monitoring and analysis of Particulate
Matter PM10 in ambient air:
Analytical balance
Sampler :High Volume Sampler with size selective inlet for PM10 and automatic
volumatic volumetric flow control
Calibrated flow measuring device to control the air flow at 11321/min.
Top loading orifice kit.
4.
Reagentes /Chemicals
Filter Media A Glass fiber filter of 20.25.4 cm (8 X10 inch) size (For heavy metels and B(a)P
measurements ,use EPM 2000 or equivalent filter ).
5.
Analysis
Filter inspection: Inspection the filter for pin hols using a light table .Loose particle shoude
be removed with a soft brush .Apply the filter identification number or acode to the filter if
it is not a numbered .Condition the filter in conditioning room maintained within 20-30 C
and 40-50% relative humidity or in an airtight desiccator for 24 hours .Take initial weight of
the filter paper (Wi) before sampling .Condition the filter after sampling in in conditioning
room maintend within 20- 30 C and 40-50% relative humidity or in an airtight desiccator
for 24 hour .Take weigth of the filter paper (Wf)

6.
Calculation
C PM 10 g/m3 =(Wf- Wi)X 10 6 /V
Where ,
C PM 10 = Contentration of PM 10 g/m3
Wf
=Final weigth of filter in g
Wi
=Initial weigth of filter in g

10 6
V

=Conversion of g to g
Volume of air sampled, m3

7.
Quality Control
Quality Control (QC)is the technique that are used to fulfill requirements for quality .The
QC procedure for the air sampling and monitoring section of this protocol include
preventative maintenance of equipment, calibration of equipment .analysis of field blank
and lab blanks.
