Fill in the blanks with the related numbers from the text and explain your reasons in
the spaces below
PASSAGE:
Its necessary to raise taxes because everyone should have a free education. 1.) Think about
the child who has the potential to be a scientist, lawyer, or perhaps, the president. Think
about the little boy or girl who, instead of pursuing his or her dreams, ends up in a web of
negative behaviors because he or she didnt have access to the same education as wealthy
Sally and Billy. 2.) Every person has a responsibility to look out for the needs of others.
We are our brothers keeper. We must stand up against injustice wherever we see it. We
must fight against injustice in the classroom, and injustice in city hall. We must be a
people united for a common cause; the education of our little ones.
3.) How many of you have gotten to where you are because another person has paved the
way for you to pursue your goals and aspirations? All of our efforts have been built on the
backs of others. Since none of us were able to do anything on our own, we need to provide
that assistance to others, not just the privileged of society, but to all people. Yes, higher
taxes mean more money out of your pockets and pocketbooks; this is true. However, think
of it not as a liability, but as an investment.
___3__LOGOS: Explain- The sentence makes the reader think about the actual causes
taxes go towards instead of viewing the situation as a bad thing by using facts as a
strategy of persuation.
__1___PATHOS: Explain- The sentence tries to appeal to an audiences emotions but
making us think that a little boy or little girl may never get to pursue their dreams,
therefore makes the audience sympathize and reconsidering that raising taxes is a good
thing.
___2__ETHOS: Explain- Ethos is used on sentence 3 because of the motivation used
against an authority of people. It is giving credibility to the audience to stand up for what
is right.

PART IV:
Directions: Should the government pass the law that states that a male can be

fined (be made to pay money) if he wears his jeans below his waist in
public? This law says that a guy can actually get a ticket for wearing his
jeans below his waist, thus exposing his underwear.

Do you agree or disagree with this law? Write a persuasive argument

using pathos, ethos, and logos to prove your point. Underline the part
of the argument that appeals to ethos. Put parentheses ( ) around the
part of the argument that appeals to (pathos). Put quotes around the
part of the argument that appeals to logos.
It has been stated that the government is considering passing a law that does
not allow males to wear their jeans below their waist line and causing them
to fined for it. I agree to this law. (When you are walking down the street
when your innocent little girl, would you want to pollute acquitted mind
when she sees an older males undergarments? How would that make her
think? Will she think its okay for men to dress that way all the time? Will
she start think of that style appropriate for everyone to wear?) Statistics
states that society produces a better performance in everyday life when they
dress well and stand tall. If children, teenagers, and men change the habit of
wearing their pants too low into dressing more appropriately and efficiently,
it will not only increase their daily performance, it will increase their selfesteem.
