Ram-Random Access Memory

RAM (Random Access Memory) temporarily stores and manages data and instructions needed to operate the computer's processor. It allows information to be accessed randomly rather than sequentially. The document discusses what RAM is, how it works by using capacitors to store 1s and 0s at addresses, how much a typical PC needs (2-8GB), different RAM types like SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, and how faster RAM speeds can improve performance by reducing access times measured in nanoseconds or increasing cycle speeds in MHz.

(Random Access Memory)

What is RAM?
How does RAM work?
How much RAM should my PC have?
What is SDRAM, DDR,DDR2,DDR3?
Does RAM speed make a difference?

What is RAM?
This has an operating system, control instructions and
functions.
Only stays when you start your computer,
Shutdown= info gone.
Memory accessed randomly.
Volatile if the computer shuts down, the information
would disappear.

How does RAM work?

Capacitors are the ones that keeps the data, it is an
electronic part in the RAM.
When a capacitor is turned on = 1 bit.
When a discharged capacitor is turned off =0 bit.
The RAM would be arranged in banks of 8.
Each RAM located an address, the computer can
then locate the data for processing.

How much RAM should my PC have?

Depends on the software you use
Expressed as megabytes(MB) or gigabytes(GB)
Modern personal computers 2-8 GB of RAM
Windows-> control panel
Can buy/ purchase additional RAM
Motherboard sets the limit
-

What is sdram,ddr,ddr2,ddr3?
SDRAM-Synchronous DRAM
SDRAM- generic name for various kinds of
DRAM that are synchronized with the clock
speed which the processor is optimized
Dual-channel technology and double data
rate (DDR,DDR2, or DDR3) have increased
SDRAM speed
ad indicates: RAM speed- 1066MHz
RAM- maximum of 4GB

Does RAM speed make a difference ?

Amount of time that RAM takes to write or read is called the access time.
Faster RAM= Faster Performance
RAM speed often expressed in nanoseconds (Billionths of second)
Lower numbers mean faster transmission and processing of data.
RAM speed can also expressed in MHz (Millions of cycles per second)
MHz rates is the opposite of nanoseconds rates.
