Overview of India's Research and Analysis Wing

The Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) is India's primary foreign intelligence agency, established in 1968 in response to intelligence failures during wars with China and Pakistan. R&AW was created as an independent agency dedicated to foreign intelligence gathering, where previously both domestic and foreign intelligence had been handled by the Intelligence Bureau. During its first director Rameshwar Nath Kao's tenure, R&AW gained prominence in the global intelligence community by playing a role in events like Bangladesh's independence and Sikkim joining India. Headquartered in New Delhi, R&AW's current mission includes gathering foreign intelligence, counterterrorism, advising policymakers, and advancing India's strategic interests abroad.
