THE COMPLETE FEATURES OF

STANLEY KUBRICK

FILM FESTIVAL OCTOBER 6-19

A GUIDE
TO THE COMPLETE FEATURES OF
STANLEY KUBRICK FILM FESTIVAL

hat makes a Kubrick film so special? What is it about the work of this director, who had a reputation
for perfectionism, on-set idiosyncrasies, genre-jumping, and terrifying actors to the brink of
breakdown that has persisted in capturing the minds of cinephiles? Perhaps it has something to do with the
way his films look.
Two film noirs from early in Kubricks career set the visually innovative tone to come, with both KILLERS KISS
and THE KILLING utilising the generic tropes of noir and producing black and white images that will sear
themselves onto your brain. Kubrick was seductive in black and white, dodging later criticisms of cold,
emotionless cinema with the slyly humourous compositions of LOLITA and DR STRANGELOVE, where the
beauty of the images were designed to suck you in then knife you with sharp irony that leaves you queasy.
Theres the films that are unquestioned masterpieces. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, despite being made in 1968, is
still a staggering visual feat, all the more impressive for that fact that all the special effects were practical
ones created in-camera, and should rightly shake up those viewers jaded by CGI fantasy scapes.
A period drama initially seems like an incongruous genre for Kubrick to dabble in, but as BARRY LYNDON
proves, there was no genre that the director couldnt revolutionise. Determined to shoot the film like an 18th
century painting, Kubrick and cinematographer John Alcott developed means via camera lenses with
extraordinary aperture capabilities to film in actual candlelight. You may not see BARRY LYNDON credited
enough in lists of Kubricks great films, but hey, sometimes even the critics are short-sighted.
THE SHINING is not only one of the best horror films ever made, but one of the most beguiling examples of
film design to plunge yourself into. The immersive claustrophobia of the Overlook Hotel, shot through with
scenes suffused in jarring colour (who can forget that eye-searing carpet, or indeed the elevator spilling forth
with gallons of red, red blood), has resulted in some of the most iconic images in film history. Shelley Duvalls
face ALONE!
This isnt even getting to EYES WIDE SHUT, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, PATHS OF GLORY, FULL METAL JACKET
experience all of Kubricks feature films with us in October, and youll find one with the visual goods to hit
you in the solar plexus and steal your breath.

FRANCOFONIA

rom the director of Russian Ark,

Alexander Sokurov,
FRANCOFONIA is another
dizzyingly intimate look at a great
art institution, this time focusing
on the jewel of French culture, the
Louvre. Taking us on a journey
through French history via the
story of the esteemed institution,
Sokurov zeros in on how the
Louvres director and a German
officer saved the museums art
treasures from being looted and
sold during the Nazi occupation of
France. A visual feast that could
only have been captured on film!

edro Almodvar is back on form with JULIETA, a return to the women-centred films he does so well.
