FC512K
The FC500K battery charger is oriented to the use in power supply systems where lead acid batteries in float service are used
as back up sources of energy.
It includes:
- a battery charger which draws a constant current from the power supply of the system to the battery, charging it up to
the power supply voltage.
- a high efficiency device (Power Mos) for the battery decoupling.
- an electronic switch (Power Mos) to disconnect the battery: if it is overloaded or if, during discharging, its voltage reaches
the final discharge voltage.
- the circuitry to monitor and signal the battery state.
- the circuitry to protect the battery against reversal of polarity, overload and deep discharge.
It can be matched with any kind of power supply.

Signals
Battery Disconnection
Relay contact signalling the disconnection of the battery:
minimum 20" earlier if the disconnection is due to deep discharge;
simultaneously if it's due to overload on the battery.
Relay rating: 1A, 48V
Battery OK
Signal indicating that the battery is disconnected or discharged or the fuse is open.
Relay contact and green led, ON if the battery is charged and properly connected
and the fuse is good.
Relay rating: 1A, 48V
Battery Test
Green led which, ON, signals that the test to check the battery conditions (proper
connection and state of charge) is running.
This test is automatically performed for 2,5" every 12' or can be carried out
manually pushing the test button (only for the period when the button is pressed).
During the test period the battery charger is switched off and, if 500S series power
supplies are used, the power supply output voltage is lowered to 0.95xVnom, in
order to force the battery to supply current. The "Battery OK" signal indicates a
fault if the voltage on the load falls down under Vnom.
The flashing of the led means that there isn't the signal connection between the
power supplies and TB2 connector or that the they are OFF.
The EN54 standard
EN54 standard deals with the power supply systems in installations for the safety of buildings.
Fundamentally it requires that:
- the power supply system must be constituted of at least two power sources, one of which must be a rechargeable battery
- the fault of a power source must not cause the fault of the whole power system
- the battery must be charged within 48 hours
- the power supply system must be able to detect and signal the loss of one of the two power sources within 15 minutes.
Though oriented to installations for the detection and alarm of fire in buildings, it can represent the standard of reference for all
the installations where the presence of a battery as a back up power source is requested.
The 500S series of power supplies includes some models expecially designed to be coupled with FC500K battery chargers.
The use of this combination gives the possibility to lower the power supply output voltage during the battery test, thus forcing
the battery to supply the load. In this way the battery efficiency can be checked.
For example: the power supply type 528SD is designed to be coupled with the battery charger FC524K; during the battery test
the power supply output voltage is lowered to 23.0V; the BATTERY OK signal switches if the voltage on the load drops under
24.0V as this means that the battery has lost its original capacity.
An FC500K module can drive up to two 500S power supplies connected in parallel.
This feature, together with the presence on 500S power supply of the decoupling diode and of a Power Good signal, gives the
system the possibility to reach full compliance with EN54 standard.
The following table shows how to couple the various FC500K models with the corresponding 500S power supply.
Protections
Overcurrents and short circuits on
the output for the battery
Auto recovery constant current protection
Battery polarity reversal
T5A fuse. After the fuse opening the reversal of the battery polarity is pointed out
by the "Battery OK" signal.
Electronic current trip type protection, which disconnects the battery if the current
it supplies is greater than 1.33xImax 25%.
The battery disconnection is pointed out by the "Battery Disconnection" signal.
Overload on the battery
Deep discharge
Electronic protection which disconnects the battery if, while it's supplying current,
its voltage drops under 0.85xVnom.
The battery disconnection is signalled, 20" earlier, by the "Battery Disconnection"
signal.
