2013 Expansion
At Barr & Prevost, we are committed to reinvesting in our firm so that we
may better serve our clients. We consistently seek out ways to improve the
quality, timeliness and value of our services through education and
certification training for our personnel, and by acquiring the most
technologically advanced software and equipment available. It is our
experience that good management and prudent investing results in longterm, happy clients.
Reinvesting to better serve our clients!
In Fall 2013, Barr & Prevost finalized the firms largest asset acquisition to
date, which includes 6 drill rigs and associated equipment to support three
additional AASHTO accredited geotechnical testing laboratories and three
offices throughout the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and
Kentucky. Through this acquisition, we now offer our clients more

Our Laboratories
Our testing laboratories provide independent Quality Control / Quality
Assurance Testing and Inspection for a diverse and growing client base,
which includes contractors, construction managers, project owners, and
state, county and municipal governments. We maintain a highly
experienced technical staff that is committed to excellence. They are
mentored and supported by a top shelf engineering group that includes
veteran geotechnical, civil, environmental and structural professionals. Our
Laboratories are AASHTO accredited and their facilities, equipment and
personnel are independently inspected and evaluated, on a regular basis,
by the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory.
Concrete & Asphalt Testing: Barr & Prevost provides QC/QA testing and
inspection services for Portland cement concrete, mortar and grout, and hot
mix asphalt performed by ACI certified technicians in the field and from our
laboratory. In-field testing and inspections are performed at the construction
site or at the material batch plant. Field vehicles are fully outfitted with testing
equipment and supplies, and we utilize a climate-controlled trailer for on-site
storage of concrete test cylinders when environmental conditions are
expected to be outside acceptable parameters. Our lab facilities, equipment,
and personnel are regularly inspected and evaluated by the AASHTO
Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) and the Cement & Concrete
Reference Laboratory (CCRL).
Geotechnical Testing & Drilling: Our geotechnical engineering staff has
proficiently completed analyses and recommendations for a variety of
projects that have included shallow and deep foundation analysis, pile
design, settlement analysis, slope stability, retaining wall design, cofferdam
design, shoring design, subgrade analysis and pavement design. We own
and operate eight drilling rigs, which include truck mounted and all terrain
type units as well as a geoprobe. Our field crews are well trained, production
oriented, and are environmentally and safety conscious. A geologist, staff
engineer or experienced soils technician normally supervises the sampling
operations, providing frequent updates to the Project Engineer on the
conditions encountered.

One of Barr & Prevosts strengths on this project was the ability to adapt to changed conditions
quickly. Barr & Prevost did a great job managing this work as minor complications were resolved
without a modification to the budget or reduction in sampling quality.

Barr & Prevost owns and operates a fleet of 8 rigs that are all newer and
well maintained. The fleet of newer rigs minimizes mechanical breakdowns
and delays.
Rigs are equipped with fluted Kelly bars. This allows using up to 15-long
casing and core barrels for higher quality sampling and faster production.
Rigs are equipped with calibrated automatic hammers for accurate SPT
counts.
For deep drilling, wireline split inner triple barrels are used to maximize
recovery and mechanical breaks in the rock core sample.
The core barrels are manufactured by Boart Longyear.
A double packer system is used with a vibrating wire transducer for water
pressure testing. This allows for actual readings within the 10-foot section
from the transducer; the calculated values from the surface gauges are used
as backup confirmation.
Ability to install nested standpipe and vibrating wire piezometers. A grout
mixer with moyno pump is also used during the piezometer installation that
allows for accurate quantities and correct mix proportions/slump to be used.
Use a mole system for slug testing that contain a variety of transducers
allowing pressures up to 1,500 psi ranges. Furthermore, software for the
slug testing is continually upgraded.
The support trucks are equipped with trailer systems that have been
specifically designed and stocked by Barr & Prevost drilling crews for deep
drilling work. This allows for all equipment to be present at the drill site and
organized in a manner to maintain high quality and increased production.
