Electrical Conduit
Is a tube to protect & route electrical wiring in a
building or non building structure. Electrical conduit
maybe made of metal or non metal.
Provide protection to enclosed conductors from
impact, moisture & chemical vapor.
Some types of conduit are approved for direct
encasement in concrete. This is commonly used in
commercial & industrial building to allow electrical &
communication outlets to be installed in the middle of
large open area.
Metal & Non metal can be bent at job site to allow
neat installation w/o excessive number of fittings
Classification of Conduits
Wall thickness
Mechanical stiffness
Material used to make the tubing
e.g. mechanical protection, corrosion
resistance & overall cost of installation. Wiring
regulations of electrical equipment in
hazardous areas may require particular type of
conduit to be used to provide an approve
installation.

Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC) thick wall threaded tubing , usually
made of coated steel, stainless or aluminum.
Galvanized Rigid Conduit (GRC) galvanized steel tubing, with a
tubing wall that is thick enough to allow it to be threaded.
Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC) is a steel tubing heavier than
EMT but lighter than RMC. It may be threaded, it has a large
interior diameter than GRC & smoother interior of the pipes
allows to easier wire pulling.
Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) sometimes called thin wall. EMT
is less costly & lighter, not threaded but can be used w/ threaded
fittings that clamp to it. EMT is generally made of coated steel.
Aluminum Conduit similar to galvanized steel conduit, generally
used in application where a higher resistance to corrosion is
needed. Such location would include food processing plant, where
large amounts of water & cleaning chemicals would make the
galvanized conduits unsuitable. Aluminum can not be directly
embedded in concrete. It is also generally lower in cost compare to
steel.
Non Metal Conduit & Others
PVC Conduit is the lightest in weight compared to
other conduit materials & usually lower in cost. It is
available in different wall thickness suitable for
embedded use in concrete, heavier grade suitable for
direct burial & exposed installations. Various fittings
made for metal are also available in PVC.
Flexible Conduit are used to connect motors or other
devices where isolations from vibrations is useful.
Flexible Metallic Conduit (FMC) is made by the helical
coiling of a self interlocked ribbed strip of aluminum or
steel, forming a tubing through which wire can be
pulled.
