COCA -COLA
Coca- cola is the most popular drink in the world. Maybe this is
because Coca-cola and its rival Pepsi are the most advertised products in
history. They are sold in more than 150 countries, and over 200 million bottles
are bought every day.
But, what exactly is Coca-cola? Well, a 99% per cent of it is water and
sugar, with carbon dioxide to make it fizzy; the other one per cent is a secret
formula. Fewer than ten people know the secret, especially about the secret
ingredient called "7X". Nobody has been able to discover what it is.
The formula was invented by John Styth Pemberton in Atlanta,
Georgia, in 1885.
Pemberton owned a drugstore in Atlanta, and he had invented several
patent medicines before Coca-cola, for instance, "Indian Queen Hair Dye",
and "Globe of Flower Cough Syrup". Pemberton called his new non-alcoholic
drink " a brain tonic", because it initially included coca leaves and kola nuts
(hence its name, coca- cola), coca leaves having been eaten by Indians in
Bolivia and Peru as a stimulant for centuries.
Pemberton sold Coca-cola as a syrup, you had to add water to drink
it. One day, in 1886, a customer at Pembertons drugstore added soda,
instead of tap water. Since then Coca-cola has been a fizzy drink, the most
popular in the world, though its inventor died a penniless man in 1888.
