Curriculum
Common Core A few years ago, NC transitioned to the Common Core Curriculum. It is a set of new national
academic standards that guide our instruction and assessments. These standards are higher and increase rigor
that takes place in the classroom to help all students meet the goals set by the curriculum. You can find out more
about our curriculum and the standards for your childs grade-level by visiting:

Reading - The reading program your child will be participating in this year is based upon several different
philosophies including Reading Workshop based on the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project involving
Dr. Lucy Calkins, Daily 5 and Daily Cafe by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, and guided reading techniques by
professors Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell. I have combined the best of each theory to create an approach
that will best help your child progress in the North Carolina K-3 Literacy Assessments.
Writing - Your child will be participating in Writers Workshop based on the work of Dr. Lucy Calkins and the
Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Your child will also progress through the North Carolina Literacy
Assessments. We will use a developmental approach to teach writing, which will permit your child to pass through
a variety of writing stages before reaching the ultimate goal of standard writing. As they progress toward this goal,
children will view themselves as authors as they use the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and
publishing). Our main focus will be for children to write introductory and closing sentences with several supporting
details on a single topic. Students will be expected to use correct capitalization and punctuation as well as
appropriate spelling (basic sight words and words with common spelling patterns spelled correctly, and untaught
words spelled phonetically)
Spelling In 1st grade, we continue with the Letterland phonics program that your child learned in Kindergarten.
Letterland is a unique phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling.
Math WCPSS is using WCPSS-created alignment lessons as their main program to best meet the needs of the
elementary math curriculum. There is a very strong emphasis on number sense, problem solving and math talk
(the ability to prove your thinking and to discuss the hows and whys of mathematical concepts).
Science - Just as in math, science will focus on using and strengthening your childs problem solving skills. The
science curriculum in first grade focuses on four areas of science including earth materials, balance and motion,
living organisms, and solids & liquids. We will be using a scientific approach to studying these topics centering
around questioning skills. Inquiry will be a big focus in our science activities. In looking for answers, students
usually start with free exploration of materials, followed by a discussion of their discoveries. Usually new questions
arise while students seek answers, leading to additional student-motivated inquiries with materials to reinforce and
extend concepts. We will also be participating in taking care of our school garden The Grow Zone!
Social Studies - Social Studies will surround topics such as family, community, responsibility, mapping skills, wants
and needs, and holidays. The children will be creating Mini-Mes to assist us with our journeys as we learn about
these topics. Also, we are working hard to try to teach our students how to be good citizens. Throughout the year
each month will focus on one particular character trait. The character traits for the year include Responsibility,
Respect, Courage, Kindness, Self-Discipline, Integrity, Perseverance, and Good Judgment.
