The controversial decision by Wildrose Party Leader
Brian Jean to implement a suspension from caucus on
his Strathmore-Brooks representative was lifted May 31,
when he reinstated Derek Fildebrandt to the Wildrose
caucus after the incident caused an outcry of support
across the province for the shadow finance critic and
raised questions about the partys instability.
Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt had been at the
centre of criticism in the past over comments made on
social media, but faced a severe slap on the wrists last
Friday when he replied to a message left on Facebook
by one of his constituents that contained a transphobic
remark.
The Fildebrandt supporter applauded the politician
for his work in the legislature, then referred to the
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne as Mr. followed by a
statement that questioned her gender identification, and
then acknowledged the pride he felt for having Fildebrandt as his MLA. In response, Fildebrandt replied to being equally proud to having this individual as a constituent. When light was shed on the homophobic comment,
Fildebrandt quickly apologized for his reply, stating he
had made a mistake by not reading the message properly, that it was inappropriate, and assured the province
such opinions did not align with his personal views.
The incident occurred only a day after Fildebrandt announced in the legislature that Ontario currently faces
the largest subnational sovereign debt on the planet
and referred to it as a failed government. He further
questioned why Alberta had invited Premier Wynne,
who was sitting in the Speakers gallery at the time, instead of neighbouring Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall
questions which had been written and approved by
Party Leader Jean himself, the Strathmore-Brooks Constituency Association said.
This was absolutely ridiculous, Derek did nothing
seriously wrong and at the very least this was a massive overreaction or at worst a backroom political power-play to get rid of Derek, said Ronda Klemmensen,
president of the Strathmore-Brooks Constituency Association.
All his major critics in these areas accepted the apology. Obviously Derek had massive support in our constituency as well as right across Alberta. This left him no
choice but to end this outrageous political game. I and
Wildrose members and supporters are delighted that
Derek was fully reinstated to the Wildrose caucus. Its
this sort of thing that unfortunately keeps really good
people out of Politics.
Klemmensen was among no fewer than seven other
constituency association presidents that signed a letter
to the executive committee that called for the immediate
reinstatement of Fildebrandt to the caucus.

Seniors Week continues to grow in Strathmore
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
A common goal brought a handful
of members of various organizations
together in the past to organize events
that recognize and celebrate seniors in
Strathmore and its surrounding area
during the provincially-acknowledged
Seniors Week an initiative that has
grown in popularity and programs over
the last three years.
Representatives from Strathmore
FCSS, the Growing Family Society,
Happy Gang, the Strathmore Municipal
Library, Alberta Health Services, and
Hope Bridges Society formed a committee three years ago to address issues
that arose from a lack of organization,
collaboration and scheduling in dealing
with the event. As a result, the committee worked together seamlessly to increase programming and create a funfilled week for the seniors in the area
momentum the committee continued
to utilize this year by adding more organizations and programs to the weeklong event.
We want to make sure that theres
something for everyone this year, and
every year we try to grow and do different things, said Dahrlyne Knaus, FCSS
programmer.
It was even more organized [this
year] because we all know what we
wanted to do and what needed to be
done, and its just a matter of having a
few meetings.
Organizations began prepping for
Seniors Week over four months ago,
which will feature previously offered
programs such as Chair Yoga, Getting
Crafty with my Grandparent, Strawberry Tea, and Shred-it. Expanding on the
line-up, seniors will have an opportunity to take part in Paint and Tea a different take on the trendy Paint Nights
Morning Guided Meditation, Zumba
Gold, and educational programming
such as an End of Life Issues presentation and KARE Volunteer Driver Program Information Session. That Fitness
Place and the HEAL walking group are
among new organizations involved this
year.
Once again, an application was submitted for the kick-off ceremonies to
be held in Strathmore, which would
include the awarding of grant money,
a ribbon cutting ceremony, and visits from officials to signal the start to
the event across Alberta. However, the
committee remained unsuccessful. By
offering more programs and building
on their success, some members hope
it will increase their chances in the
future. Partnering on the project, the
Strathmore Municipal Library is offering three free programs to seniors, that
make up 21 per cent of the Strathmore
population, and remain optimistic that
Strathmore will host the kick off in the
near future.
Strathmore is very family focused
and thats very wonderful, but I think
its really good to have a week thats
dedicated to the seniors of our community and we want them to feel special
and have a good time that week, said
Carmen Erison, assistant director with
the Strathmore Municipal Library and
a committee since the committees inception.
I think as our momentum grows and
the province starts to see how many
more events we are going to be having through the week, it will definitely
garner some attention and hopefully
we can get the kick-off some day. Were
still striving for that as a committee.
The Town of Strathmore initiative
REC the Streets will also be running
throughout the month of June in chorus with Seniors Week, which will run
from June 6-12. All programs are free
to attend.

Bleeding out is a term used to describe death from
wounds where the bleeding is not stopped in time.
There is work being done on a new product that is an
anti-bleeding gel that will be applied to a wound and
will instantly stop bleeding. The product works well
inside and outside the body and will stop bleeding
within 10 seconds. Should be available in about 2
years.
With everyone being touched by cancer themselves
or someone they know, it seems that no progress is
being made toward stopping the disease. Theres new
research occurring that works to retrain the bodys
immune system to attack cancer cells in those with
blood cancers. Quite good results have been seen so
far.
There is a slangy term for people who are obsessed
with having a really dark tan because they dont feel
right being too pale. The term is tanorexic. Serious
cases of this pseudo-clinical condition has people
using tanning beds and exposing themselves to the sun
for long periods of time. Too much sun-exposure can
cause skin cancers. Tan sensibly and use sunscreen.
Allergy sufferers are reminded that pollen is plentiful
at this time of year. Keep your windows and doors
closed. Dry clothing and bedding in the dryer rather
than hang them outside. Use air-conditioning to cool
your home rather than window or attic fans. Also pets
can collect pollen in their fur so keep them off your
bed. Pollen counts are highest in the early morning.
Our pharmacists are familiar with all the allergy
medications on the market today. We can advise you
on which one would be suitable to control your allergy
symptoms.

Chamber revamps to meet community need
JILL CROSSLAND
Marketing & Communications Director
The new Strathmore & District Chamber has
been repositioning itself to more effectively meet
the needs of the community.
We have improved communications with members and businesses. Ads now run consistently
in the three local papers and our thanks to the
Strathmore Times for providing us with this space
for a monthly column. For those of you who are
online follow us on Facebook (StrathmoreDistrictChamber) and Twitter (@SDCOC). The Chamber
Newsletter is emailed when there is a specific
event or important information to share. Lastly the
new website (StrathmoreDistrictChamber.com) is
being developed as the go to resource for business updates, events and to showcase Chamber
Members.
Visibility is important which is why a list of Directors names is occasionally run in the newspapers or social media; we want you to reach out
and connect with your Chamber Board. Attending
Town Council and County of Wheatland meetings
is also on the radar; Chamber President, Terri Kins-
man or Executive Director, Shelley Toderian will
be present at those meetings as often as possible.
The current Board of Directors is diversified in
experience and backgrounds but we would like
to see members and especially some younger entrepreneurial faces around the table. Dates and
details for upcoming Board meetings are available
on the website home page or by clicking Events.
Dont be afraid we are a friendly group and the
sound of occasional laughter has also been known
to emanate from our meetings.
Home based business, professional services or
store front you are all important to us. One of our
goals going forward is to work with Travel Alberta
and similar organizations to enhance tourism in
our region. This would provide a much needed
economic boost for local business.
Finally if you are a Chamber member there are
new opportunities for your business to collaborate with the Strathmore Chamber. Would you
like to host a networking event at your place of
business? Partner with the Chamber to host a
Business Growth Conference? To discuss either
of these contact Shelley Toderian 403-901-3175,

Fildebrandt focused on reuniting Wildrose
party following suspension
Continued from Page 1
Fildebrandts social media was also flooded with
messages of support, and a poll asking Albertans
whether the suspension from the Wildrose caucus
shouldve occurred showed that, out of nearly 3,500
responses, 70 per cent were in opposition of the
decision to suspend.
Im happy to be fully reinstated to the Wildrose
caucus, Fildebrandt told the Strathmore Times. Political drama doesnt help anybody. I was honoured
with the outpouring of support from constituents
and party members right across Alberta. I felt alone
when this first happened, but Im honest to God
touched by the support Ive received. Now Its time
to work and focus on providing a strong viable alternative to the NDP.
Jean announced he had been transparent in the
past about his stance regarding no tolerance for
comments regarding intolerance of any individual
and possible significant consequences for such mistakes. He further said that Fildebrandt had a long
series of missteps on social media and the latest
incident was inconsistent with values of the cau-
cus. However, he did mention that Fildebrandt did
apologize for the comment and thanked him for the
apology.
A statement was issued by the Wildrose Party earlier this week announcing the caucus had voted to
lift the suspension effective immediately. According to the statement, Fildebrandt agreed to improve
on how he handles and controls his social media,
which includes hiring a social media manager to
deal with public interactions.
Derek is an important member of our Wildrose
team and we all expect him to have a bright future within our organization, said Wildrose Leader
Brian Jean.
Along with our entire Wildrose team and the
broader conservative family, we look forward to
Derek joining us once again to work on building a
united conservative alternative that invites and attracts Albertans from all backgrounds who believe
in smaller government, strong families an safe communities.
Fildebrandt was pleased to rejoin his colleagues
and move forward with the partys and his political
agenda.

Ralphs grandparents, August and Lottie Tiede, with their son
Leslie, moved from Gifford, Idaho to the Colonization Colony
north of Rockyford, in 1917.
After spending a year here, they purchased land at SW 15-2423 which was located on what is now the TransCanada Highway, at Rockyford Corner, and later became known as Tiedes
Corner.
After farming there for two years, they moved to Gleichen to
live and work, before returning to their own farm. In 1927, the
Midway Service Station was established, and became a landmark for travelers, even being shown on AMA Road Maps.

Thought for
the Week
~
Leslie known as Les, worked on the family farm,
as well as providing custom seeding, irrigating and
combining, in the area. He met his wife-to-be, Annie, while she was working for the H. Scheer family,
and they were married in 1935. Annie had been adopted by the John Friesen family after
emigrating from a German village close
to Moscow, Russia. They were among
several families who settled in the Namaka District. In 1938 they began farming on their own, the same year their
son Ralph was born. Ralph and his two
sisters, Anne and Linda, were raised on
the family farm and educated at the Namaka School through Grade 9, when
they moved to Samuel Crowther High
School. Ralph attended and graduated
from Olds School of Agriculture, after
taking the two-year course.
Joans (nee Muirhead) family originated in Stirling, Scotland. Her father
John travelled to Canada in 1910 with
a shipment of purebred Clydesdale horses. He
worked on a farm in the Claresholm area before
moving to Sedgewick, (50 miles east of Camrose, on
Hwy 13). In 1915, he enlisted in the Canadian Army,
and served in France during WW1. He married Elizabeth Haines of Sussex, England before returning
to Canada with his bride, in 1920. They purchased
land six miles south of Sedgewick, and farmed there
for many years before John became an auctioneer,
and they moved into town. Joan was born in Killam,
Alta. in 1938, and had four sisters and two brothers. She was raised and educated in Sedgewick, and
finished Grade 12 at Central High School, before
moving to Calgary where she attended the Henderson Business College, then became a secretary at
Calgary Power Ltd. Joan and Ralph met while she
was visiting her sister Kay and family, who lived in
the Standard area. They were married on Nov. 14,
1959. In the Spring of 1960, they moved to the farm
at Tiedes Corner, as Ralphs parents had moved to
Strathmore where Les became the manager of the
Strathmore Seed Cleaning Plant.
Apart from farming, Ralph owned and operated
a school bus in the Crowfoot District, while Joan
worked at The Royal Bank in Strathmore.
During this time, Ralphs keen desire to become a
pilot materialized, and he obtained his private pilots
license on April 5, 1965. This date happened to coincide with the birth of their son, Darren, so Ralph
celebrated by flying his plane along the Bow River,
past the Calgary General Hospital.
Ralph and Joan were active members of Alberta
Flying Farmers, and attended many fly-ins around
Alberta. After attaining sufficient flying experience,
he obtained his commercial and night flying endorsements. He then purchased a
Piper Pawnee spray plane and began working with George Nicklassen in the Rosebud and Hussar areas, followed by working with Neil
McClain, who farmed and ran an
aerial spraying operation west of
Strathmore. They provided invaluable instruction in the art of aerial
application. The next great event in
their lives occurred on March 23rd,
1969 when their daughter Shelagh
was born. They enjoyed living and
raising their family in the Crowfoot
District.
The family moved to a farm previously owned by Jack and Virginia
Colpoys in 1973, where they continued grain farming and aerial application, and they started a Limousin Cattle herd. Around this time, they formed Target
Airspray Ltd when son Darren and his wife Cheryl
both took an interest in the farming operation and
aerial application. They have a family of two sons
and two daughters.
Ralph and Joan retired in 2010, and Target Airspray Ltd and the farm are now owned and operated by Darren and Cheryl. Ralph will celebrate 50
years of Aerial Application in 2016. He and Joan are
especially grateful for the neighbours and customers
who have supported them in business and friendships throughout the years. They also appreciate the
many reliable and capable men and women who
have worked with them in all their endeavours.
Their daughter, Shelagh, is married to Doug Winkler, a farmer who farms near Indus. Shelagh is a
teacher at Langdon where they live with their twin
sons and a daughter.
Ralph and Joan have been active in church and
community affairs, have served on the board of the
Canadian Aerial Applicators Association, Alberta Flying Farmers, Strathmore Masonic Lodge #53, Alberta
Limousin Association and the Crowfoot Community
Association.
Great advances have been made over the years
in aerial application with the invention of the GPS,
which has streamlined the navigational part of the
industry.

Make a Pitch returns
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Strathmore is gearing up for its
third annual Lets Make a Pitch
event, which will focus on revitalization and community pride.
While it serves as an opportunity for non-profit groups to
pitch an idea that will help to
improve the town and the community, the organizers continue
to look for sponsors for the prize
money.
Each year we chose a different theme and the groups can
apply on the online applications, said Kendra Armstrong,
the community events assistant
for the Town of Strathmore.
The big incentive is that there
is a cash prize that is given and
the hope is to have $10, 000.
The event is based on the popular TV show; Dragons Den. The
judges, who have yet to be chosen, will evaluate the projects
on three key aspects: how they
enhance community engagement; how they inspire change;
and how they strengthen Strathmores community pride and
quality of life.
Each group is given three minutes to present their project idea
to the panel of judges. The winning team will receive a cash
prize in order to help them accomplish their project but the
amount of money is dependent
on sponsorships.
Last years theme was strengthening quality of life and promoting pride within the community
and the winners were the Western District Historical Society
who proposed to move the St.
Michaels and all Angels Anglican
Church building in town and
transform it into a museum and
offices.
As the winners they will attend
the event this year in order to
give an update on their progress.
The event was the brainchild
of Strathmores then-Chief Administrative
Officer
Dwight
Stanford who had experienced
a similar event by the Talisman
Energy at the Economic Developers Conference in 2014.
Lets Make a Pitch will be held
at the Strathmore Travelodge on
October 4 at 7 p.m. and applications will be accepted until
September 20 at noon. While the
applicants have to be non-profit
groups, Armstrong encourages
the public to go out to the events
to see what projects are showcased. Anyone interested in entering can apply on the website
or contact Kendra Armstrong at
the Town of Strathmore at (403)

Showcasing local art
ANDREA ROBERTS

The Strathmore Municipal Library is
currently holding an art exhibit showcasing the talent of several local artists from the Wheatland Society of
Arts. The exhibit features the work of
eight artists, who range in style from
abstract to realism.
What makes this quite unique is
that because we have several different
artists it is different styles of art, said
Carmen Erison, the assistant director
of library services at the Strathmore
Municipal Library.
There are different techniques,
everything from acrylics, to oils, to
sketches. So it is quite a nice variety.
So far the feedback of the exhibition
has been positive, as Erison believes
that people enjoy seeing the different
kinds of art.
The artists from the Wheatland Society of Arts vary in age and experience.
The library is showcasing the work
of new artists and those more experienced in the field.
We have always been a big supporter of local art, said Erison.
To be able to partner with the
Wheatland Society of Art was kind of
a good move given that it is good exposure for their group as well as exposure for these artists. We have allowed
them to be in a nicer, unique setting.

The Wright time to retire
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Crowther Memorial Junior High
School will soon say goodbye to Principal Ivan Wright, who is set to retire at
the end of the school year, making him
the third Strathmore principal within
the Golden Hills School District to retire this year. After 33 years of working in education, Wright decided it was
just the right time to move on.
I figure I still am healthy and happy
so its time for a new challenge in life,
he said.
So I have decided to retire and see
what life holds. It is a little bit scary, a
little bit different and the older you get
the more difficult it is to see yourself
changing but I think it is good for the
soul to do that every now and then.
Wright was born and raised in Saskatchewan, where he attended the
University of Saskatchewan and got his
first two degrees, a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Library
Sciences. He worked as a high school
English and Physical Education teacher
and later as a school librarian. Wright
also went to San Diego State and the
University of Lethbridge for his Masters Degree in Education.
Together with his family, they eventually moved to Alberta where he
worked for a number of schools in the
area, before becoming the principal of
Crowther Memorial Junior High School
when it opened in 2001.
Education was not always his passion. Wright grew up wanting to pursue a career as a NHL hockey player.
He retained that first love throughout
his career by coaching hockey, basketball, football, badminton and volleyball.
Over the years, Wright watched education shift and became part of that
change. He remembers when comput-

ers were brought into classrooms and
how it allowed students to access the
world while sticking to the fundamentals of education.
I can see that education has really
stepped up to the plate, he said.
To really differentiate and help students in all areas and so that is very
different from how it was when I first
started.
While Wright has some things
planned for his retirement, he knows
he will miss the school and his long career in education. According to Wright,
what he will miss the most is the way
the students made him laugh every
day. Since announcing his departure,
Wright has received many heartfelt
comments and farewells.
Pat Walsh, one of the secretaries at
the school, is also retiring this year and
has worked alongside Wright for the
past 16 years.
I have loved working with him, she
said.
We have had lots of laughs like we
are on fixed incomes now so we will
be sharing coupons, sites and things
like that. But yeah there will be days
where I miss the kids and the people
here but I am looking forward to retirement too.

Local kids learn about farm safety
in first-of-its-kind program
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
Hundreds of students in the Strathmore and surrounding areas participated in a rare hands-on learning opportunity that aimed to educate the
youth on safety practices in rural Alberta last week.
More than 330 Grade 6-9 students
from Crowther Memorial Junior High
School, Carseland School, Westmount
Elementary School, Brentwood Elementary School, and Rosebud River
School, joined approximately 500 students from across southern and central Alberta on May 26, for AltaLinks
Farm Safety Day a program not offered previously.
I dont have all rural kids, but they
do go visit friends and it was a nice
engaging way to show them safety
items without preaching to them,
said Brentwood Elementary Grade 6B
Teacher Amy White, who said 60 kids
from both Grade 6 classes attended
the event at the Stampede Park.
We know rural areas and farms
tend to give kids a little bit more responsibility at a younger age so theyre
around those materials. For us, we
are starting to see the independence
come out in our kids at that age and
theyre making those decisions alone,
perhaps without supervision all the
time, so if theyre doing that without
the education behind it, it could be really scary.
Albertas largest regulated electricity transmission company, AltaLink,
launched their first annual program
last week in partnership with the Calgary Stampede and Ag for Life, in concert with a rising number of accidents
in the province and discussions raised
around topics of safety habits.
Therefore, the event addressed key
topics including chemical handling,
electrical utility safety, grain safety and
confined spaces, large equipment and
vehicles safety, and animal behaviour.
According to White, her students
were most impacted by a dummy demonstration and simulation regarding
seatbelt safety. Students also observed
the effects of an auger on newspaper
dummies, and were asked to walk a
straight line while wearing impairment
glasses.
I grew up in an agricultural community and have seen the incredible
work ethic and can-do spirit rural Albertans bring to the work they do day
in and day out, said Scott Thon, president and CEO of AltaLink.
I am also aware of the complex nature of our agricultural operations and
the dangers associated with it. Thats
why AltaLink, in conjunction with the
Calgary Stampede hosted Farm Safety
Day to provide education and awareness to our youth on how to work
safety and prevent injuries.
Farm Safety Day furthermore featured presentations by various speakers, a rollover simulator, and a demonstration on what happens when
clothing snags on farm machinery in
this case a power take-off shaft.
Students from Trochu, Crossfield,
Okotoks, Cochrane, and Arrowwood
were also present during the day.

event, which took place on

Rosebud student turns poetry into theatre
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor
Stuart Giesbrecht, a graduating student at Rosebud School of the Arts, performs his Final Project, The Court of my
Heart, June 3-5 at Rosebud Church.
Giesbrecht and director Jeany Van
Meltebeke have written
and adapted the show
based on Giesbrechts
original poetry.
Giesbrecht and fellow student Esther Koepnick tell the story
through poetry, music
and dance. Giesbrecht
plays lead and Koepnick
plays various roles, including performing her
own music.
Its the story of a guy
who is, at the start of
the show, very much in
this place of self-doubt
and shame, Giesbrecht
said. He manages to
break out of that place and see his own
self-worth, and to look out and see who
he is and his purpose in life ... its very
much my own journey.
The court of my heart is a place
where I go to basically punish myself.
Telling yourself youre not good or that
youre not enough or that youll never
be loved. That place where youre beating yourself up.
There are themes in it that speak to
the kind of universal story of shame
and doubt. Through telling my story ...
I hope (others) will be able to see that
they can step out of that place of doubt
and shame as well.
I think were all in a similar place,
he said. Were all trying to make it, and

you know, we have to open ourselves
up to failing and to being broken and
then we can be broken together.
In telling the story of how hes grown,
producing the show has fostered even
more growth for Giesbrecht.
What has helped me grow is realizing
that Im not alone in my struggle, he
said. Im not alone in
asking for help or having shame and doubt
about myself. Im not
alone in that, and that
people are able and
willing to help.
And of course the
process has brought a
great deal of joy.
Seeing my poetry
kind of come together
as a cohesive script, especially under the guidance of my director and
her inspiration and joy,
has been a joy, Giesbrecht said. Things that
grow out of the words
(of my poetry) ... seeing them take root
and life and meaning in a play.
He hopes audience members will
leave this show with the same encouragement hes received.
I hope people who come to the show
will leave knowing they are not alone
in their struggles with shame or doubt,
that there is hope. There is help, Giesbrecht said.
The Court of my Heart plays in Rosebud Church, June 3 at 7 p.m., June 4 at

Seeking a life worth living
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Steven Greene is just like
any other 23-year-old. He
loves football, playing guitar
and helping his mom in the
kitchen. But unlike others his
age, Greene is paralyzed from
the waist down and recently
had to have his left hip joint
and femur removed due to a
bone infection. Having just
received his new wheelchair
that is designed to accommodate his situation he found
he could no longer get into
the familys current vehicle,
which has greatly reduced his
ability to be independent. After exhausting their options,
the family is now asking the
community for ways to organize a fundraiser.
I am just a regular guy,
said Greene.
The only thing different
about me is that I cant walk.
I just want to live life just like
any other person.
Greene was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect where
the closing of the backbone
and membranes around the
spinal cord is incomplete. After years of sitting in a chair
that was to small he ended up
with pressure ulcers. In April
2015 he developed osteomyelitis, an inflammation of the
bone or bone marrow due to
an infection, which eventually
led to the removal of his hip
joint and femur.
After a 10-month stay in
the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, the Greene family found
that Steven could no longer
get himself in and out of the
car with his new and larger
wheelchair. As a result, the
family found that they need a
wheelchair-accessible van. A
vehicle that will cost the family about $46,000- funds they
are unable to provide. While
he uses the Strathmore HandiBus to get around to appointments it costs them $60
every time he goes out which
can become rather costly over
time. Greene and his family
would like to have the freedom to go where and when
they want together. He would
also like to go to university,
either for music or to further
his culinary passions.
The family set up a GoFundMe page and has approached a number of charities for help. They will also
be taking part in the Newsy
Neighbours 2nd Annual Get
To Know Your Neighbour
Festival where they will be
hosting a dunk tank. The family is looking for help from
the community; they need to
raise about $10,000 more in
order to get the van.
Steven should be able to
live the quality of live that
he should live, said his mom
Connie Greene.
Like any other 23-year-old
that goes out and does what
they choose to do. I want
Steven to able to do the exact same thing with the help
from our community that
would make it possible for
those things to happen for
him.
The Greenes ordeal has led
them to point out the difficulties that people with disabilities have to deal with when it
comes to mobility and getting
around town. To help volunteer or come with a fundraiser
idea contact Connie Greene

Outside Mullingar has been just a
treat, a complete delight of a show,
Pattengale said. This one has been extra special because its written so well.
Its so funny. And the audiences have so
much fun.
To be in this incredible show and to
go for this incredible story journey ... it
means so much to me and at the same
time it means so much to a lot of people, Muir said. People have said with
a glint of laughter and the remnants of
tears in their eyes, that was our story.
Audience members have also said
they found it healing to watch the final
scene between Anthony and his father.
How cool that its been just recognized as a great story and a great show
by the Critter Awards people as well,
he said.
Winners of the Critter Awards will be

I just want to say a great big huge
congratulations to all my fellow nominees and especially, of course, the Rosebud folk that have been nominated. Im
thrilled for them, said Paul Muir, playing Anthony in Outside Mullingar.
Any of us are always grateful when
something comes along that is that
kind of affirmation, and its nice to
be acknowledged by what is largely
the Calgary theatre community, said
Muir, whos also education director of
RSA. The fact that some of our grads
were nominated as well, for shows
that theyve done in Calgary ... that really means something too, for Rosebud
School of the Arts.
Its such a wonderful honour to
be nominated and Im so excited that
Rosebud got so many nominations and
that were being included in that (Calgary) theatre community, said Heather
Pattengale, playing Outside Mullingars
Rosemary. Im really excited for Paul
(Muir) too ... hes doing such a wonderful job in this show.
Though they welcome the recognition, nominations and awards arent
their motivation for what they do.
We do it for the story, for wanting
to offer up that story to the audience,
Muir said.
Were just working hard and doing
what we love, said Pattengale.

Green request turns into health debate
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
Council members failed to completely see eye-to-eye when a request
to purchase 1,000 stainless steel water
bottles and support Strathmores efforts to become more environmentally
proactive by using a water dispensing
station, raised hygiene and contamination concerns.
The Strathmore Sustainability Committee, which was formed as a result
of the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games
last year, passed the water dispensing
station on to the town as a legacy project to be used during public events.
Having already been utilized during
the games and at public events over
the past year, the station is already
booked for seven separate occasions
this spring and summer. Yet when
the request was made to purchase
the 1,000 water bottles for a price of
$4,000 to be sold at the events, Councillor Steve Grajczyk and Councillor
Rocky Blokland remained hesitant
about the investment, citing the maintenance and water quality as concerns.
Im not concerned about buying
1,000 bottles, but that water thing bothers me a bit, said Councillor Rocky
Blokland. I just really want council to
be aware of how stringent and tough
these Alberta Health Service inspections are. Theyre getting tougher by
the year. To me, this is a little scary.
The unit has been licensed by Alberta Health Services and is inspected
regularly. Town employees are also
currently working on drafting a policy
focused on supervision.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk, who is
a member of the Strathmore Sustainability Committee, voiced his concern
about contamination and taking on too
much liability but utilizing the unit.
His remarks caused frustration for his
fellow committee member Councillor
Bob Sobol.
We have supervision at all of these
things and you are welcome to attend
as one of the members of the Sustainability Committee, to assist with this,
said Councillor Bob Sobol. Were taking this very seriously and Im upset
that you would look at this as a health
hazard, because were taking a lot of
steps to make sure its not a health
hazard. Our tank is inspected by Alberta Health Inspections, I dont know
how else to say that. Were not doing
this on the fly.
The proposal aimed at purchasing
each water bottle for under $4 and
selling it back to the public for $5,
with money going back into the Financial Stabilization Fund from which the
funds were utilized. The bottles would
help reduce plastic in the landfill and
contain the Town of Strathmore logo
with a saying, Refill not Landfill.
We already have the tank and as far
as I understand you guys are already
following all the safety protocols, said
Councillor Pat Fule. It comes down to
whether you feel comfortable enough
that this committee and its people and
administration are doing their due diligence in assuring that everything is hygienic and the bottles are a completely
separate motions, its cost-neutral.
The motion came before council to
order the bottles in time for the Get to
Know Your Neighbour downtown festival. Despite opposition from Councillor Rocky Blokland, Councillor Steve
Grajczyk, and Mayor Michael Ell, council passed the motion to invest in the
stainless steel water bottles.

Their SHOW AND SALE is on June 11 at the
Rockyford arena and we encourage you to come out and see their hard work; the show will start a
10:00 am and the sale will begin at 2:00 pm coming just in time for barbeque season. These homegrown
steers or lambs are the result of countless hours of work from the 4H members and are guaranteed to be tasty!
Get together with friends and neighbours and buy a steer or lamb for the freezer. We will take your animal home after
the sale and will deliver it to a local butcher of your choice. All you have to do is pick up the meat when it is cut and
wrapped and have your BBQ ready. What a way to give back and say thank you to these kids.
Highway cleanup crew May 2016
All of the members have been active in the community this year starting off with our $2,600 donation to Easter Seals,
serving at the wild game dinner, participation in Alberta highway clean up and volunteer activities throughout the year.
We believe in giving back to the community, in 2013 we donated to the food bank and our donation was generously
matched by EnCana, in 2014 we donated a whopping $23,500 to the Childrens hospital and as a result were the largest
donation given by a youth group, last year we donated to Easter Seals in support of Camp Horizon a project close to our
former leaders heart, and earlier this year we gave $300 to the Handi-bus in Strathmore. The club has been around for
53 years and has been active in the community through all of them, and aims to mold youth in a way that will create a
group of tomorrows leaders. So when you purchase an animal you are not only supporting the 4H member you are also
supporting our communities future. Most of the kis put their money aside for post-secondary education.

Rugby girls en route to provincials
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
With 20 minutes left on the clock
and Foothills Composite High
School narrowing in to close the
gap to 10 points, the Strathmore
Spartans rugby girls team turned
their apprehension into productivity and cemented a monumental
lead that awarded the team its first
zone championship.
The Spartans - a combination
of players from Strathmore High
School, Holy Cross Collegiate,
and Drumheller Composite High
School - secured an early lead on
May 25 and were able to perform
quick steals when their opponents
came back aggressively, contributing to a 49-27 win.
Weve kind of relied on certain
aspects of our game in the past,
where this time, I think, the whole
team worked together to make
sure they got the win, said Jerry
Flaws, Spartan rugby girls coach.
Its our first zone championship
at our school for the girls, so thats
pretty exciting. Weve come close
a couple of times, there were a
few seconds, but never first. So all
three schools really came together to work and contribute to that
win.
Flaws had previously praised the
speed of the backs and their ability to move the ball well. While he
attributed their skill to winning
two 7s tournaments this season,
the teams performance last week
signaled an aptitude for teamwork.
In contrast to recent practices,
where the team focused on indi-
vidual skills, the Spartans will dedicate their practices to the team aspects of the game before heading
to provincials this weekend.
Its a huge accomplishment, but
we would still like to go into provincials and hopefully medal, said
Flaws.
I think the speed in our backs
has been amazing this year, but
now we found a way to play for
those hard yards inside too.
Although the win signified the
first zone championship win, a
berth was given to the team in
the past for hosting the provincials where they received a bronze
medal.
The Spartans rugby girls team
will head to Lethbridge to take on
three teams during the provincials
on June 3-4.

Four High School Rodeo participants
managed to score enough points this rodeo season to make it to the Alberta High
School Rodeo Provincials.
Locals Jewel Bristor, Hayzes Stevens, Destiny Stevens and Marissa Boisjoli all qualified to showcase their skills for the event
from June 3-5 in Grand Prairie.
Unfortunately, Boisjoli, who qualified for
the breakaway and team roping, will be unable to go after injuring her knee playing in
her basketball provincials.
I have been practicing a little, said Boisjoli. This is also my first year out of the five
years that I have been doing high school
rodeo that I am not going to provincials so
Im very sad about that.
Jewel Bristor, Hayzes Stevens and Destiny Stevens have spent the last two weeks
honing their skills in the events they qualified for.
Destiny Stevens qualified for goat tying
while Hayzes qualified for tie-down roping
and team roping. The siblings made sure to
be well prepared ahead of time ensuring
their horses were shod, equipment packed
up, and they are ready to give their best in
their events.
Im not so much nervous just kind of
excited, said Hayzes.
Meanwhile Brister will be busy during
the provincials weekend as she qualified
for three events - barrel racing, pole bending and the queen contest. She ended up
being season leader in pole bending.
For the queen contest, Ive been getting
ready for all that all year, she said. You
have to write a speech and have to write a
test, you have to model and do impromptu
and showmanship.
During the contest Brister will be presented with a riding pattern and she will
have to complete it on her horse in order
for the judges to see what kind of rider she
is.
Alberta High School Rodeo Provincials
contestants will try to qualify for 2016 National High School Finals Rodeo, which will
be held in Gillette, Wyoming July 17-23 and
the Canadian High School Finals Rodeo,
which will be held in Nanton July 28-30.

HCC celebrates new football team
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
The newly formed Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks football team hosted a
jamboree on May 28 at the schools
field to commemorate the end of their
spring camp.
Three other school teams from Breton, Brooks and Red Water came out
to take part in the challenge. A jamboree is a series of mini practice games
against different opponents before
the start of the next season.
We got a lot of students who never
played football before, said coach Michael Annicchiarico. But it has been
a lot of fun and we are hosting this
jamboree and gaining a lot of experience for the fall.
The spring camp proved successful
but highlighted where players could
improve.
The Hawks lost their first game of
the day to Brooks, but defeated the
team from Breton in their second
game.
However, Coach Annicchiarico was
rather proud of the team and how
they had managed to play competitively throughout the event.
The team will start their inaugural
season in the six-on-six man league in
the fall. The league has a mixture of
experienced and newly-formed teams,
and Annicchiarico said they are unsure of what to expect from their upcoming league. However, their main
goal is to grow the football program
and be competitive.
We are excited, he said. We are
growing and we appreciate the support from the community. Its been
awesome.

We had a great first two

The Strathmore Venom Junior B Tier II
won 16-11, handing the division-leading
Calgary Axemen their first loss of the
season on May 25 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Getting a win on these guys was
good, said Venom player Keenan Brown.
It was their first loss of the year and it
was a boost to our confidence.
The first period featured a back-andforth battle. However, the Venom took
control of the second period and ended
up with a win.
You know what, we played a really
good game tonight, said head coach
Mike Olver. From beginning to end they
played a great second and third. The first
period wasnt perfect, but it was good
and then it was a really good game.
After their last game questions arose
about the Venoms probability of qualifying for play-offs, but with the win Olver
is confident that they have a good chance
if they keep up the consistent game play
and score a few more wins.

Mulligan is proud of the team
and said that while the practices have been up and down, the
players have stuck it out for the
long haul.
The team has a number of
good players who double as
leaders on the team. Jayse Wilson, who is a returning player
and one of the over-age players,
was a short stop for Thompson

He is our stud, he is our best

Mulligan. He is great on the

However, Mulligan said that

Local
strongman

War of West
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Standing tall at 58 and weighing
in at around 200 lbs, Nolan Sauve,
who placed third in Canadas Strongest Man under 200 lbs last year, is
a local strongman currently preparing
for part two of the War of the West
Strongman Competition, which will
take place in Calgary on June 11. Participants are trying to make it to the
top 10 for a spot in the professional
circuit in Qubec. The War of the West
is a two-part strongman series and is
open-weight, meaning competitors
of all weight classes compete against
each other. Strongman competitions
are a weight-lifting based sport that
challenge different aspects of mental
and physical strength, speed and endurance.
The first and second part are completely different events, said Sauve.
They both have six events in each
competition.
The first part of the War of the West
took place in Regina on May 22 and
Suave placed second last out of 12
competitors, two of which already
have pro status.
The competitor with the most points
at the end of the competition will be
given a pro card. Sauves goal though,
is to do the best he can in the competition as he is one of the smallest
competitors in the event; some of the
other participants are around 300 lbs
and over. In order to prepare for part
two he has been training hard. This
includes practicing the implements of
the events that are in the upcoming
competition. The events of the next
part will be a max deadlift, a squat
for repetitions, a Viking press, a load-
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Saleem Al-Mubayed. Saleem was born in Damascus, Syria on October 6, 1944 and passed away
peacefully on May 26, 2016 in Strathmore, Alberta.
He was a much loved father, husband, grandfather
and friend.
The Al-Mubayed family would like to sincerely thank
our sponsors who are like our family, our friends in
Strathmore, the hospital in Strathmore, all the nurses
from Homecare who helped us and supported us,
the Muslim, Syrian and Arab communities of Calgary
and the Canadian government. We are ever thankful
and grateful to all who helped us at this time, we will
never forget your kindness; you will always be in our
hearts and in our prayers.

ing event with a wheelbarrow, and
tire-flip. Originally there was meant to
be an arm-over-arm truck pull but the
event had to moved inside.
While some of the training can be
done in a gym, he has to train with
the items that will be in the competition, like flipping an 800 lb tire or
placing a 230 lb atlas stone onto a 6ft
platform- items not usually found in
an ordinary gym.
Sauve originally got interested in
doing strongman competitions after
watching them on TV and YouTube
videos and decided to give it a try.
I did a competition two-and-a-half
years ago and loved it, he said.
His plan after this event is to go on
to the Alberta Provincials for Strongman to hopefully earn a spot in nationals.
The Fun Country Riders Third Show and Gymkhana took place on Sunday, May 29 at the Strathmore
Rodeo grounds. Huge thank you goes to Larry Kirby for judging the show classes. We would also
like to thank all the volunteers, including many brand new ones. The next event is scheduled for
June 12. Below is the placing of each class up to third place at the most recent event.
