Ski Trip to Prato Nevoso 2016

In the early hours of Saturday 13th February, 45 girls from years 10-12, and five members of staff,
Miss Price, Miss Donnelly, Mrs James, Miss Bould and Miss Howse all boarded an aeroplane from
Gatwick to Nice, France. After a short flight, and a much longer coach journey, we arrived in Prato
Nevoso, a ski resort in Northern Italy. We were staying at Hotel Mondol, which was right on the ski
slopes. Shortly after arriving we went to collect our ski boots, skis and helmets from the local hire
shop in the town, which meant we were ready to ski the next morning! After a much appreciated full
nights sleep, we were up early, ready to get on the slopes and start our lessons. The first day was
very fun, but also tiring, and for many people it was the first time they had been skiing. Of course
there were a few incidents one which involved a ski chair lift and some broken poles, but soon
everybody got the hang of it, and were zooming down blue and red runs, with the help of the friendly
Italian instructors.
The first two or so days, the slopes were a little icy, but on our third day it snowed for a whole day
and night! All this snow was amazing and everybody was really excited to go skiing in the fresh
snow, and some girls even had a go at doing a jump or two.
Whilst skiing was brilliant, we also had lots of fun doing the night activities- this included swimming, a
talent show and night skiing! Night skiing was particularly great, as it was just after the big fall of
snow, and the conditions were brilliant. Whilst it was particularly chilly, everybody had a great time!
Another activity everybody enjoyed was exploring the town one afternoon, it was really interesting to
look around all the little Italian shops and have a crpe or hot chocolate.
On the last day everybody was really disappointed that the trip was over and that the time had gone
so quickly. Everybody learnt a lot, and had a great time exploring all the different runs. The trip really
boosted peoples skiing confidence, as lots of people had only tried at the snow dome. Lots of new
friendships were made, skills were learnt and everybody was exhausted from all the exercise, but it
was of course the best trip we had been on. A big thank you to all the teachers who made the trip
possible, it was an incredible week!

Bella Barcelona!
On 13th February 2016, 29 girls along with 4 very brave teachers filled the coach, bright and early in
the morning, with excitement and anticipation for the trip ahead, eager to put our Spanish skills to the
test .
Upon our arrival at the Urbany hostel, which would be our home for the next four days, we
were pleasantly surprised to find that our rooms were spacious, clean and modern, a far cry from the
dirty, old hostel we had imagined. Having enjoyed a rooftop dinner with a great view of the city, we
made our way to the iconic Sagrada Familia where we were amazed by the beauty and intricacy of
the design.
The next morning we visited El Poble Espanyol which gave us the opportunity to see
centuries of Spanish architecture and culture, representing the very diverse areas of Spain in one
village. After a relaxing lunch in the sunshine, we began our five hour guided tour (yes, five whole
hours!) during which we explored the most beautifully quaint corners of Barcelona including Santa
Maria del Mar and some of Gaud's masterpieces, Casa Batll and Casa Mila. With blisters, aching
feet and crippling hunger, we walked for what felt like a marathon to find the restaurant where we
were to have dinner.
After a much deserved good nights sleep, we embarked on exploring the various markets
dotted around the bustling streets of Barcelona. We visited the flea market before venturing towards
La Boqueria at the heart of Las Ramblas. Following this, we headed towards the harbour , Port Vell,
before eating lunch in Maremagnum, a commercial centre containing various restaurants and shops.
In the afternoon, we return to the Cathedral of Barcelona to experience its beautiful interior
decoration. We were fortunate enough to go onto the rooftop of the cathedral and enjoy the
breathtaking views across the whole city and beyond. We spent the evening in the company of the
charming Renato, a waiter at the Hard Rock Cafe who served us with our "Legendary Burgers." For
our evening entertainment, we experienced one of the most famous and fantastic elements of
Spanish culture - flamenco dancing - in a dramatic and authentic performance.
On the final day, we first headed over to Parc Guell - a unique park in the sense that it
revolves around the spectacular architecture of Gaudi. For our final excursion we visited the Nou
Camp - home to FC Barcelona - to look around the club museum and get a snapshot of what the
atmosphere is like on match day. Exhibits included the most recent Champions League and La Liga
trophies and memorabilia from Lionel Messi's incredible playing career. We returned to the airport,
ready for our departure home, tired and disappointed that our trip had come to an end.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable trip that would not have been possible without the dedication
and preparation of our teachers, Mrs Hand, Mrs Dhamia, Miss Bannister and Mrs Saul.

ABRSM EXAMINATION RESULTS

Very well done to all girls who took ABRSM examinations, both last term and this
term. All grades are a challenge as candidates have to play pieces and scales, as well as
undertaking supporting tests of aural and sight reading skills. Membership of a school band or
orchestra or (in the case of keyboard players, pianists and singers) a school choir, is extremely
valuable as it improves these skills in an enjoyable way. The vast majority of our instrumental
students understand this and take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities on offer at
school. To those who do not, all the instrumental and curriculum staff recommend most
strongly that you do so. The groups are run for your benefit and if you take part you will
definitely improve your next examination score!

Wolverhampton Music School Flute Day

On Tuesday 26th January, a Flute Day was held at Wolverhampton Music School. Three
students from Girls High attended: Molly Chapman, Kathryn Safrany and Bryony Yates, along
with many others from other city schools, to have an afternoon of flute playing. We shared
the day with two teachers from the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College
of Music Jonathan Rimmer (flute) and Jo Sealey (piano). Some students were lucky enough
to play in the Masterclass given by Jonathan, who gave advice on improving technique and
performance. A flute ensemble was formed by students, who had the opportunity to play
piccolos, alto flutes and bass flutes, to perform pieces including Youve Got to Pick a Pocket or
Two from Oliver and Hushabye Mountain from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, in a short evening
concert. Jonathan and Jo finished the concert with a splendid forty minute recital. The
afternoon was very enjoyable and all students gained masses from the experience. Many
thanks to Mrs Manasseh, our visiting teacher of flute, for coming along to help on the day.

Wolverhampton Music School String Day

This was held during the afternoon and evening of Wednesday January 27th, and this year
was for players of grade 4/5 and above. WGHS participants were Holly Anderson, Alice
Bennett, Hannah Cox, Angharad Daniel, Reet Duhra, Chloe Godfrey, Janey Harold, Amy Lloyd,
Amritpal Matharu, Amy Pullan, Thea Saxon, Avika Sharma, Holly Sides, Jessica Smith, Frankie
Tulley and Poppy Whitmore.
We were given the opportunity to play a wide variety of music with young people from
Wolverhampton secondary schools. The repertoire included a medley from West Side Story,
Shostakovichs Waltz and An Irish Rhapsody. As well as this, we were honoured to play one
of the BBC Ten Pieces, The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, with Katie, a
brilliant violin soloist from the CBSO orchestra. After a full orchestra rehearsal, we
enjoyed a performance by the Leo String Quartet. Their chamber music included duets,
trios and quartets from composers such as Dvorak and Mozart. During the afternoon, Janey
and Chloe received a training session from a member of the Leo Quartet on a piece of
chamber music they had been rehearsing previously. This was Beethovens Op.18 quartet,
which was performed in the evening concert for family and friends which concluded the day.
Also in the concert were performances from the main orchestra, Leo Quartet and St Peters
school quartet. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and we would like to
thank Mrs Rayner and Mrs Bishop for organising the event.

Brass Day Review

On Wednesday 24th February, Hanna Wood, Lily OShea and I went to the Wolverhampton
Music School for the musical event of Brass Day. We were accompanied by Mrs Bishop and
Mrs Rayner, and joined later by Mrs Daniel and Chloe Godfrey from Year 13, who all played in
the orchestra for the evening performance. The whole day was thoroughly enjoyed by all those
who participated. The guest player was Mark David, the Artistic Director and Head of Brass at
the Royal Academy of Music. He is also currently the Principal Trumpet in the Academy of
St Martin in the Fields, and has performed as a soloist with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the
Royal Festival Hall and Buckingham Palace.
Having arrived at the Music School, after a lunch break, we were split into our designated
rooms: tubas, baritones and euphoniums, trombones, trumpets, and French horns. We trumpet
players had the great delight of being conducted by Mark David himself for the beginning
section, and the agony experienced by the second trumpets (including myself) on the dreaded
17th bar of the arrangement of The Earl of Oxfords March by Byrd, which taught us
something new. Mark, in turn, held the trumpet and played the notes while we blew and
controlled the air flow which was really very interesting. Having this coaching session by a
fantastic trumpet player taught me a lot and for me, was one of the highlights of Brass Day.
After a short break, all brass players proceeded into the hall where we watched the rehearsal
by the orchestra and Mark David as the soloist for the Haydn concerto which gave us a glimpse
of the amazing musical talent we would see later in the concert. The orchestra had to play very
fast to keep up with the tempo at which Mark David was playing! Further rehearsals and
breaks ensued, followed by a French horn soloist, a trombone soloist and a trumpet soloist
rehearsal. Then, the concert finally began. The Haydn concerto was played first and words
alone cannot express how wonderful it was. To have experienced that music live with a person
such as Mark David as the soloist, accompanied with the orchestra, was perhaps a once in a
lifetime opportunity.
The soloists and the individual ensembles went on to play their pieces and I am sure that all
those who took part in Brass Day and all the parents who came to the concert very much
enjoyed it. As well as the advice and tips given by Mark David, if there is one thing that I can
take away from that experience, it is the phenomenal feeling of playing music with other brass
players in the cityand ending up with sore lips from playing the trumpet for about 4 hours

Year 7 Visit to Symphony Hall

This took place on the afternoon of Friday, January 22nd. The girls went
to hear the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performing a
programme of music taken from the BBC Ten Pieces Secondary project.
The music featured some very well known music, such as Habanera
and the Toreadors Song from Carmen, which included a memorable
trumpet solo, to less familiar items such as Night Ferry by the
contemporary composer Anna Clyne. Vaughan Williams beautiful string
music The Lark Ascending showcased the leading violin in the orchestra, and the afternoon concluded
with Mambo! from Leonard Bernsteins musical West Side Story. The girls were able to listen to the
instruments of the orchestra live a valuable aural experience, and everyone had surprisingly strong
opinions about which was their favourite piece! Some of this years Ten Pieces will feature in the WGHS
Spring Concert on Tuesday, March 1st, so those who particularly enjoyed the Habanera and Toreadors
Song have another opportunity to hear music described by the girls in the following quotes:
My favourite piece was Habanera by Bizet. It was passionate and feisty and I really
enjoyed hearing a range of orchestra instruments play. Kasia - 7S
My favourite piece from the Symphony Hall concert was Chanson du Toreador by Bizet. When you
listen to the music, the trumpet creates the image of a bullfighter in your mind. Tanaya 7G
Symphony Hall itself created quite an impression too frequent comments were

I would love to go again, I really enjoyed the visit, I had a really enjoyable time,
I enjoyed listening to a different range of musical pieces than I normally would,
I would definitely go again.
Year 7 Soloists Concert
This new venture took place in the Hall at 4pm on Thursday 11th February, and we were
treated to a wide range of instrumental and vocal solos from over thirty performers.
It was good to be able to welcome so many parents and friends to provide a friendly and
supportive audience for the girls, many of whom only began to learn their instruments at
the beginning of the academic year. Solo singing items included traditional favourites
such as My Favourite Things and Part of Your World, and there were performances
from oboists, saxophonists, flautists, clarinettists, trumpeters and all four members of
the string family (violin, viola cello and double bass). In addition, there were
contributions from our classical guitarists and pianists. Thank you to our visiting
instrumental teachers Mrs Manasseh, Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Wassermann and Mr Read, as
well as Mrs Rayner, for coming to support and accompany the girls. Performance
opportunities are always valuable in developing skills of self-confidence and presentation.
Well done to all participants it was a lovely concert!
Mrs J Bishop and Mrs F Daniel

Spring Concert Tuesday March 1st

This large scale concert gave all our bands and choirs the opportunity to perform, and some of our
senior leavers performed solo items as well.
Rock and Pop began the evening with items by Twenty-one Pilots, My Chemical Romance and Panic at the
Disco. They were led by Finn Grice in Year 13, who also played drums and guitar, and this was her last
concert with the group. We would like to thank Finn for leading the group over several years. Her
knowledge and enthusiasm, not to mention excellent leadership skills, has resulted in an expansion of
membership, and development of expertise and performance skills. She will be a hard act to follow!
The concert included a number of items based around the BBC Ten Pieces Secondary Music project,
which the Music Department has been using in a variety of ways in the classroom at Key Stage 3.
Vaughan Williams beautiful work for strings, The Lark Ascending, came first, with the violin solo
performed by Mrs Rayner. To end the first half, Year 13 trumpeter Kate Foley was the soloist in the
third movement of Haydns Trumpet Concerto, accompanied by String Orchestra and Intermediate
Strings. These pieces gave our string players the chance to learn how to accompany solo
instrumentalists a skill in itself and everyone worked hard to give lovely performances which were
very much enjoyed.

The second half contained two more of the BBC Ten Pieces. Vocal Ensemble were

accompanied by the classical guitar group in Bizets Habanera, Concert Band played Bachs Toccata in D
minor and the concert ended with a combined choir and orchestral version of Bizets Toreadors Song
from Carmen. Mention must also be made of other groups which participated. Monday Band gave an
excellent performance of America from West Side Story, tackling the tricky rhythms very
successfully. A large group combining both Senior and Junior choirs performed Lets Face the Music
and Dance, by Irving Berlin and Think of Me, from Phantom of the Opera with solo cadenza sung by
Emily Rogers in Year 12, who recently sang the part of Christine with TACT theatre group. Jazz Band
played Soul Bossa Nova and Take Five, and the flute ensemble performed a medley of tunes from the
musical Wicked, arranged and directed by Year 11 GCSE Music student Kathryn Safrany. Small group
items were Berceuse from the Dolly Suite by Faure, performed by Kathryn Holmes, the Intermezzo
from Carmen played by Bryony Yates and Sophie Thorpe and Andante and Allegro for clarinet duet by
Crusell, played by Frankie Tulley and Sophie Thorpe. The Music Department would like to thank these
and all our other leavers for their support and enthusiasm over their time at the school. We are very
pleased that they have enjoyed the activities, which all run for the development and benefit of the
girls, and we hope they will keep their music going in the next stage of their lives.

Dudley Festival March 2016

This took place over two weekends, providing an occasion for girls to gain experience of
performing to an adjudicator, who provides constructive feedback. It is a useful way to
practise performing in a non-exam situation and all participants gained from the experience.
Below are listed those who were awarded certificates. Well done, and thank you to Miss
Hutchinson and the teachers of all the girls, who supported them.

Badminton

Badminton
Since September of this academic year, myself and Sarina (Year 12) have been extremely lucky to have
been given the opportunity to coach the school teams for badminton. Although primarily working with Year
9, we have loved working with many girls from Y9-11 and helping to improve their badminton skills.
Monday 18th January Badminton Tournament
The U14 teams faced St. Peters, Wolverhampton Grammar, Royal and Aldersley and after some excellent
games we saw a Girls High final between the A team; Simran Aggarwal, Isabelle Hickinbottom, Ria
Jagadish and Neha Guapta and the B team; Tanvi Rana, Lily Hale, Zain Alsoud and Caitlyn Taylor. It was
a similar story for the U16s who faced St. Peters and Royal with another Girls High final between the A
team Elisabeth Jones, Hannah Brace, Harshini Muthukrishnan and Sayuni Fernando and the B team Taran
Khangura, Amy Wyatt, Rayna Kandola and Tanisha Bhatara.
We were lucky to receive a fantastic set of results with both the U14s and U16s being ranked 1st and 2nd
in their respective categories. Unfortunately only the two A teams went through but there was a very high
level of badminton played by all of the girls and they should all be really pleased with their achievement.
Thursday 11th February - Black Country Finals
The two qualifying teams from the previous tournament went on to represent the school in the Black Country
finals in Walsall. Once again the girls played brilliantly and both teams excelled, beating all other teams
in their respective categories and therefore going on to represent the Black Country in the regional finals.
Tuesday 15th March - Regional Finals
On arrival in Birmingham the girls of both teams were faced with very tough opposition playing against the
very best schools from across the West Midlands. The girls played excellently and won several of the
matches with very tight scores, often winning by just 1 point. Despite some excellent and very closely fought
matches the girls narrowly missed out on the final. Both U14s and U16s played in the 3rd and 4th place
rankings and after two well played games the girls in both teams came 4th.
I know the girls were initially despondent after missing out on 3rd place but they should all be incredibly
proud of their performances. This was the first time in many years that the school had reached the regional
round and coming 4th in the West Midlands is a commendable achievement.
A special well done to our 2 regional teams :
U14 : Simran Aggarwal, Isabelle Hickinbottom, Ria Jagadish, Neha Gupta and Tanvi Rana
U16 : Lizzie Jones, Harshini Muthukrishnan, Sayuni Fernando, Taran Khangura and Nancy Brand
SmashUp! Badminton
I understand that over the past few weeks our focus at the lunchtime club has been on the regional girls in
preparation for their finals however this will change.
After the Easter break SmashUp badminton will be starting on Tuesday lunchtimes, it is open to all girls
whether you have experience or not! The focus is on playing games and having fun, games will be played
with music on in the background to motivate everyone and provide a friendly atmosphere.
We hope to see many of you there. If you're not sure if it's for you come along the first week and see for
yourself!
It has been a pleasure working with, and coaching all the girls over the past 4 months and we are looking
forward to spending even more time with you all in preparation for upcoming tournaments both this year
and next.

CRICKET

On Tuesday 8th March, the U13 girlss cricket team travelled to Aldersley Stadium to compete in the Southern
Lady Taverners Competition. Due to the high interest, we entered two teams; one year 7 team and one year 8
team.
Year 7 team : Grace Garrett, Paige Haines, Frances Connolly, Abigail Turner, Martha Browne, Scarlett Holyhead,
Lucy Munson, Mira Mistry, Tillie Kendrick, Tanaya Patel.
Year 8 team : Lucy Toor, Anna Dimitrewski, Rudee Robinson, Laura Taylor-Powell, Shaniese Rani, Pheobe Ody,
Anwen Jenkins, Rosie Peach-Robinson, Naomi Imeson, Lauren Tolson.
There was some cricket played by both teams. The year 7 team showed great promise for the future. The year
8 team won the competition overall and secured a place in the county finals.
On Tuesday 15th March, the U15 girls cricket team travelled to Aldersley Stadium to compete in the Southern
Lady Taverners Competition. 9 girls went, including 2 year 9s and 7 year 10s.
The day got off with a nervous start. However, the girls soon overcame that and were victorious in their first 3
matches. With some excellent catches and wickets being taken, they were top of the league. This was mainly
due to the superior bowling of all girls.
After lunch, their confidence increased, meaning that the games were improving and even more 6s and 4s were
being hit - it was excellent!!
The sportsmanship between the players, Rosie Pearson, Zain Alsoud, Ellie Bache, Sofia Ahiar, Hannah Brace,
Georgia Griffiths, Cilpha James, Tanisha Bhatara and Sophie Richardson, was fantastic. All girls worked together
to produce amazing results. The girls won all 4 of their matches and qualified for the county finals.
Unfortunately, WGHS cannot attend the county finals to represent South Staffordshire due to the date being
changed to 24th March and the logistics being too difficult to overcome. We would like to thank Arthur
Pickering for his continuous support and encouragement, providing WGHS girls with hours and hours of
effective coaching.
