Sr. Adults Met on April 19

The Senior Adult
Ministry gathered this past
Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at noon. Twenty-one
of us gathered to hear from Cambria FindleyGrubb our guest speaker for the day.
Cambria has been with UNICEF on a
one-year fellowship and spoke to us about
The Refugee and Migrant Crisis, UNICEFs
work in Syria. With pictures and mindblowing statistics she brought us up-to-date on
the refugee problem in the world and more
specifically in Syria. She told us there are 30
million children in the world who are fleeing
conflicts in the world today and that there are
more people on the move now than since
WW II. The good news was that UNICEF is
making a difference. With their immunization
efforts Polio is soon to be declared eradicated
in the world. Food, water, education and
human trafficking are other areas where they
are making a difference. UNICEF WORKS IN
MORE THAN 190 COUNTRIES AND
TERRITORIES TO PUT CHILDREN FIRST.
We are thankful that Cambria is always so
willing to speak to us about the work she is
doing since graduating from Chapman.
We meet next month, May 17, 2016, at
noon in Chapman Lounge. Continuing with
information of unrest in the world our speaker
for that day will be Rev. Susan GonzalesDewey our regional co-pastor. In March,
Susan with a delegation of church leaders from
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and
the United Church of Christ and in conjunction
with Global Ministries, traveled on a
pilgrimage to the Middle East. Susan will
share with us her reflections on that trip.
We enjoy much fellowship and have
outstanding programs each month, and if you
havent attended before or in a while try to
come next month.

Its Happening On Sunday

The annual Fullerton
CROP Hunger Walk will take
place this Sunday, April 24, at 1 P.M.
Walkers from many congregations in Fullerton
will leave the Plaza at 1 P.M.to walk a route of
about 3 miles in length down to Orangethorpe,
west to Highland, back north to Chapman,
with a slight detour to go by Pathways of
Hopes Food Distribution Center, then east on
Chapman to Harbor and back to the Plaza.
We already know that $1795 has been
pledged to the members of our team online
and others have their own collections. If youd
like to support a walker, or more than one of
them, be sure to seek them out on Sunday to
give them your gift in the form of a check,
payable to CWS/CROP, or a cash contribution.
before they turn in their donor envelopes
between Noon and 12:50 P.M. Our walkers are:
Jennine Martinez, Helena Baxter-Herrera,
Phil Forbes, Kathy Thompson, Donna &
Barry Woodbridge, Ed Linberg, Alice Maraj,
Rico Sanchez, Mark Matthew, Amy Styffe,
and Emily Steward-Styffe. Proceeds from this
years Fullerton CROP Hunger Walk will be
divided, as usual, on a 75/25 basis. Church
World Service will receive 75% of the total
raised, while Pathways of Hope, the local
ministry serving homeless and hungry people
will receive 25% Either way, your gifts in
support of the 2016 Fullerton CROP Hunger
Walk will help people who are in need,
whether here in Orange County or around the
world! We are grateful to our walkers who are
raising funds and to all of you who have
already given to support a walker, as well as
and to those of you who will yet do so!

We Get Letters . . .
In a letter addressed to
Dale Suggs, Sharon Ellis,
President/CEO of Habitat for
Humanity of Orange County wrote:
Thank you for supporting strength,
self-sufficiency and stability through shelter.
With First Christian Church of
Fullertons gift of $1,000, received on Monday,
March 28, 2016, families, children and veterans
have a safe place to live, grow and thrive. We
appreciate your continued support through the
weekly Tri-Tip sales in your faith community.
The full text of this letter is posted on
the bulletin board for everyone to read.
Thanks to everyone who worked on
the Tri-Tip Project during 2015.
Your work as a team enabled us to
make this gift of Habitat for Humanity of
Orange County.

Good New!
Eric Mitchell, Director of
Government Relations, of Bread for
the World sent this message to on April 15.
We are overjoyed by the support
shown for the Global Food Security Acts in the
House of Representatives this week. Thanks to
YOU, 370 of your representatives voted yes in
support of efforts by the U.S. Government for
food security around the world.
There is still work to do on this bill in
the Senate, but we are getting closer to the
Global Food Security Act becoming law. Tell
your representative in the House, assuming he
or she voted yes, that their support has
brought us one step closer to ending global
hunger, malnutrition and extreme poverty.
David Beckman, President of Bread
for World, sent this e-mail on Thursday.
More good news to share! Yesterday,
the Senate passed its version of the Global
Food Security Act (S. 1252) by voice vote with
strong, bipartisan support. This win, on the
heels of the Houses passage of the bill last
week, gets us closer to making Feed the Future
permanent, helping build global food security
for years to come.
To call the House of Representatives
dial 800-826-3588 or the Senate at 800-862-3688.
Ask for your representatives office to find out
how he/she voted on the Global Food Security
Act, (H.R. 1567) and if they voted yes, tell
them you are grateful for their support for this
bill. Members of Congress usually get more
negative responses than positive ones, so
heres an opportunity for each of us to let those
who voted yes to know we appreciate what
theyve done on behalf of hungry people
around the world.
FYI, the Outreach Ministry is making
plans for the 2016 Offering of Letters,
sponsored by Bread for the World. More
details will be coming soon about this years
Offering of Letters. Also, look for the certificate
of our partnership with Bread for the World
which is posted on the bulletin board.

Mission Report from Chile by Elena Huegel

The Wee Waltz - a metaphor for mission
The Spanish word acompaamiento and the core value mutuality made me
think of Carolina Fernndez, my former Sunday School student from Paraguay who
is now coordinating a project called Landfillharmonic where young people are taught
to make and play classical musical instruments (violins, cellos, and flutes) from garbage. Her life is a
living example of acompaamiento. She spent New Year's Eve with me at the Shalom Center retreat,
where we lay on the look-out over the waterfall and watched the "natural fireworks" of shooting stars
and moonrise. I asked her to share her vision and calling of mutuality or acompaamiento. This is
how she answered.
"At camp we have a favorite dance called the Wee Waltz. I don't know where it is from, exactly,
but I guess from some European country. Whenever I think of my calling to walk alongside others, I
think of this dance that I was taught at the Jack Norment Camp in Paraguay when I was a young
child. I have used the same dance to teach the young musicians in our Landfillharmonic program
about acompaamiento."
At the beginning of the dance, we greet each other face to face. So also begin our relationships.
We stretch out from our own space and hold hands. When the music starts, we must adjust our
rhythm to that of the other person and we are aware that we are also coordinating with an entire
community dancing around us. Sometimes we lead our partner and sometimes we follow. We
struggle to adjust our individual rhythm to that of our partner as well as the whole community. At
one point in the dance, we move into our partner's space and dance from his or her place, but we are
still ourselves and we have shared our own space, too. We respect each other's space, but we also
connect holding hands. We are anxious and nervous, trying not to step on each other, miss a beat, or
forget the pattern. We laugh feeling a little silly. But everyone else laughs too. Everyone else makes
mistakes and it is ok. We are vulnerable in our clumsy attempts toward gracefulness, reminding each
other to not count "one, two, three" out loud.
In another part of the dance, we change partners. We must let go and adjust again, learning to
be flexible and the pattern comes more easily. We change partners with more and more ease, until we
return to our original partner and discover we have both learned. We dance better because we have
been with others, and we have each grown in our individuality as well as flexibility. We celebrate our
growing capacity, we stumble less, we are less tense and begin to enjoy the flow of the dance.
In acompaamiento there is a strong physical and spiritual sensation of being in the presence
of another person. To walk alongside is not only an emotional or intellectual exercise.
Acompaamiento is the experience of being formed and transformed by dancing with another
person, within the circle of a community, to then take the beauty and grace of that dance to all the
other spaces and times where we are called to be present. Acompaamiento mutuality is the way we
let others know they do not dance alone and we are reminded that we, too, receive the gift of the
presence of others."
