Phased-array Scan Setup
3.1 General Scan
3.1.1

Linear Scan

a) Definition
Linear scan, also called electronic scan or E scan, is a scanning method with a fixed number of
elements scanning along the probe arrangement direction in the same focus rule until the whole
probe scanning is finished.
That is to add a select window with a fixed size on the phased-array probe, and the elements in
that window are T/R elements. When transmitting/receiving of elements in the window is finished,
shift the window at a fixed interval to select the T/R elements for the next transmission/ reception
without changing the focus rule, and it works in the same way till the whole probe selection is
completed, which is similar to manual straight-line scanning with a conventional probe. The
scanning principle is shown in Fig. 3-1, and the image display as in Fig. 3-2.

Fig. 3-1 Linear Scan Diagram

(Every three elements in one group, and scan at an interval of one element)

Phased-array Image Measurement
The phased-array image measurement of this system includes: gate measurement and cursor
measurement. The gate measurement is to measure wave and depth, and the cursor
measurement is to measure horizontal position.

4.1 Measuring Zero

The measuring zero of phased-array image is a reference point of coordinate zero on the image,
which enables the user to measure the relative position of flaws on the image. Therefore the
position of the measuring zero can be determined by the user. For easy description, the measuring
zero is defined as: the interface between the probe (wedge) and the work piece in depth direction,
or certain position of the probe (wedge) in horizontal direction. The horizontal zero recommended
for different probes (wedges) is not the same. See the detailed description below.
a) The vertical and horizontal zero of 0-degree phased-array probe (wedge) is as shown in
Fig. 4-1.

Fig. 4-1 0-degree Probe Zero

Chapter 7
Conventional UT Wizard
Conventional UT wizard consists of TOFD wizard, DAC wizard, AngleCalibration and
AutoCalibration wizard. TOFD wizard is for helping users to finish TOFD scanning process design
for specific tested work pieces, including work piece beam coverage simulation and ultrasound
imaging parameter settings; DAC wizard, AngleCalibration and AutoCalibration are for giving user
instructions on how to finish setup of conventional ultrasound DAC curve, material velocity, probe
zero and probe angle.

7.1

TOFD Wizard

TOFD helps users to finish TOFD scanning process design for specific tested work pieces, with
single channel and dual channel for selection. To make it clear, this manual uses single channel
mode as an example, and the operation of multi-channel is slightly different from that of single
channel.
TOFD wizard has 5 steps: Setup channel num Workpiece coverage simulation Setup wave
parameter Setup encoder parameter Setup image scanning parameter.
Operation:
1)

Select TOFD in the conventional UT imaging desktop menu, and enter TOFD wizard, as
shown in Fig. 7-1. This step is for ParamOpen and ChannelNum setup. Tap Next to go to step
2) when the setup is finished.
a) ParamOpen: to recall the existing scan setting parameters, and revise them in the wizard.
b) ChannelNum: to set up the number of scanning channels. When ChannelNum is set to 1,
the system is default to select the 1st channel for scanning.

7-1

Fig. 7-1 Channel Number Setting

2)

Step 2: bean coverage simulation. Step 2 is for setting up work piece, probe and wedge
parameters. The system will simulate ultrasound propagation path in the tested object
according to user setting parameters, so that the user can intuitively understand the
ultrasound propagation situation in the tested object. See Fig. 7-2 for work piece parameter
setup and Fig. 7-3 for probe and wedge parameter setup. Tap Next to go to step 3) when the
setup is finished.

Note: In single channel mode, the probe and wedge parameters can only be set once, and each
channel can only be set up individually in multi-channel mode.

Fig. 7-2 Work Piece Parameter Setting

7-2

Fig. 7-3 Probe and Wedge Parameters Setting

3)

Step 3: conventional UT parameters setting. This step is to calibrate probe delay, set up
ProbeSpac of the crawler and ultrasound imaging parameters. Tap Next to go to step 4)
when the setup is finished.
Note: In single channel mode, the conventional ultrasound parameters need setup once only.
But each channel needs to be set up individually in multi-channel mode.
a) Calibrate Probe Delay:
(1) Install the TOFD probes on the wedge and then dock the two probes as shown in Fig.
7-4. Adjust system parameters such as gain, test range and display delay to make
the probe docking echo shown at the center of the screen.

Fig. 7-4 Probe Delay Calibration for Docking Probes

(2) Adjust aStart and aWidth parameters to bring the main peak of the pulse echo go
through the center of the gate, move the probe wedge back and forth till the highest
echo is displayed on the screen, as shown in Fig. 7-5.

7-3

Fig. 7-5 Calib_Zero Wave Form

(3) Stabilize the probe, and press F7 (Calib_Zero) to finish calibrating ProbeDly.
(4) Use a ruler to measure d value in Fig. 7-4, which is for setting probe space of the
crawler.
b) Set up crawler probe space:
(1) Install the probe and the wedge on the crawler.
(2) Adjust the probe fixing position on the crawler, and make the flank space of two
probe wedges D=PCS-d , where PCS is the probe center space, with the default
displayed in the information bar above the screen image, d is the measured value
in step 4) of the operation of Probe Dly Calibration.
Tip: The default calculation formula for PCS is PCS=
thickness of the work piece,

4
htan , where h is the
3

is the angle of the probe wedge. This calculation

formula assumes that the parameter setting in Focus of TOFD imaging wizard step
2 is the default setting. If Focus is user-defined, the calculation formula will be

PCS=2 f tan , where f is the focus position.

c) Set up ultrasound imaging parameters
(1) After finishing probe space setup, put the crawler at a defect-free position on the
work piece.

7-4

(2) Adjust the gain to about 70-85dB, and then adjust PulseVol, PulseWd, Damping
and Frequency according to the probe size and frequency, enabling the lateral
wave and bottom wave appear on the screen, as shown in Fig. 7-6.
(3) Adjust Line1 and Line2 to measure thickness of work piece (displayed at the top of
image frame). If the measured value is different from the actual thickness of work
piece, adjust PCS menu to make the value consistent.
Note:
1.

In some test standards, the bottom variant wave (transverse bottom wave) is
required to show on the screen. In this case, the bottom variant wave will be
shown by adjusting Range and DisplayDly.

2.

In dual channel mode, the bottom wave of channel 1 work piece may not be
displayed because of the testing process setting. For thickness calibration,
usually an artificial defect with known depth and lateral wave are used for
Channel 1, while a known artificial defect and bottom wave are used for
Channel 2.

Fig. 7-6 TOFD Wave Form

4)

Step 4: encoder setting, which is for operations such as encoder select, increase, revision and
testing as shown in Fig. 7-7. See 8.2 Encoder Management for details. Tap Next to go to step
5) when the setup is finished.
7-5

Fig. 7-7 Encoder Setting

5)

Step 5: Set up image scanning parameters, which is for setting the encoder moving direction
when scanning, scan line average number and channel spacing (for dual channels only), as
shown in Fig. 7-8.
a) Direction: set the encoder moving direction when scanning. Forward means the encoder
moves away from the operator, and Backward means the encoder moves towards the
operator.
b) Average: scan line average, which is for filtering out random noise and increase S/N ratio.
The elimination of random noise is more obvious if Average is bigger.
Note: Under the circumstance that the average number is inversely proportional to the
encoder moving speed (i.e. PRF is the same), the encoder moving speed is slower when the
average number is bigger.
c) ChannelOff: the probe distance between two ultrasound channels. This parameter only
works for the dual channel mode.

7-6

Fig. 7-8 Scanning Parameter Setting

6)

After finishing steps 1) to 5), press F4 (Finish), the screen prompts whether to save the
parameters or not. Choose Yes to bring up the saving setting parameter screen, the user can
