RIO DE JANEIRO CARNIVAL

It is the biggest party on the planet, televised to every country

in the world achieving the perfect harmony between joy,
wildness and history.
The carnaval tradition dates back to the 1720s with the arrival
of Portuguese immigrants to Brazil, who took many slaves
from Africa and with them their continents traditions.
The African used masks and costumes made with feathers,
bones, herbs and other elements to invoke gods and ward of
evil spirits, which had a symbolic meaning and is now part of
the costume design of modern Rio Carnival.
The first dance Rio carnival was held in 1840 with lively street
parties with polkas and waltzes.
In 1917 the dance, music and samba was introduced to the
carnival. The samba is originally from Angola and West Africa,
which is a ritual dance CONDOBLE accompanied by palms and
drums.
With the abolition of slavery many Africans remained in Brazil,
where they accomplished to popularize this rhythm.
Musicians, composers and dancers gathered to show their
talent creating clubs or organizations that later would become
the samba schools.
The first parade of these schools was in 1932. The first school
of samba was born in 1928 and still to this day is called
MANGUEIRA.
The term "Carnival" means "farewell to meat" and always
performed according to the start of Lent.
Carnival lasts five days, begins on Friday and ends on the
following Tuesday, called "Fat Tuesday", the most important
days are Sunday and Monday because its when the samba
schools parade takes place.

Parades are held in the streets, the most important street is

Marques Sapucai Avenue.
Since 1984, the architect Oscar Neymeyer designed the
zambodromo DARCY RIBERO PASSARELA, with capacity for
62,000 people.
Every year thousands of dancers, singers and musicians come
to present their carnival floats, costumes and rhythms. Each
school has a time of 85 minutes to present their whole year's
work. Each year schools have diferent themes and costumes
are never repeated, which makes unique this carnival every
year.
This year, 12 schools participated samba and the theme was
dedicated to housewives entitled MUSA DO DIA A DIA.
Schools can have up to 4,000 participants and between 7 and
8 floats. Every school has its own color to represent them
Leading the parade, we find COMISION DE FRENTE a small
group of dancers responsible for presenting your school and
greet the public.
There is a maximum and minimum number of floats for each
school; the first float is called ABRE ALA which carries the
most prominent dancers.
Outside the zambodromo it is also a carnival, the joy is felt
