Welcome to Algiers

Algiers capital and chief seaport of Algeria, It is the political, economic, and cultural
centre of the country.
Algiers is built on the slopes of the Sahel Hills, which parallel the Mediterranean Sea
coast, and it extends along the Bay of Algiers. The city faces east and north and
forms a large amphitheatre of dazzling white buildings that dominate the harbour and
the bay. The city takes its name (Arabic: The Islands) from several small islands
that formerly existed in the bay,

#1-Casbah of Algiers

The old Turkish, or Muslim, section of


Algiers is built on the upper slopes of the
hills and has preserved much of its
architectural character of high blank-walled
houses and narrow winding streets. The
Muslim section is dominated by the
fortress of the Kasbah (Qabah),
designated a UNESCO World Heritage site
in 1992; it was the residence of the last
two Turkish deys, or governors, of Algiers.

kadder ?

was an Algerian religious and military leader


who led a struggle against the French colonial
invasion in the mid-19th century. An Islamic
scholar and Sufi who unexpectedly found
himself leading a military campaign, he built up
a collection of Algerian tribesmen that for many
years successfully held out against one of the
most advanced armies in Europe.

#3-Cathedral Notre
dame dAfrique

Located on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers in


Algeria's capital city, the Notre Dame d'Afrique is a
19th century Roman Catholic Church. As the
basilica of Algiers, the Notre Dame dAfrique (Our
Lady of Africa) was designed by Jean Eugene
Fromageau, the chief architect for ecclesiastical
buildings during French colonial rule. It took
fourteen years to complete the basilica and it was
inaugurated in 1872.

#4-Jardin dessais of Algiers

The Test Garden Hamma (French: Jardin d'Essai du Hamma) is a 58-hectare (140acre) botanical garden (38 hectares) of gardens and 20 hectares of arboretum
located in the Mohamed Belouizdaddistrict of Algiers. It was established in 1832 and
is now still considered one of the most important botanical gardens in the world.

Tipaza
Tipasa, as it was then called, was an
ancient Punic trading-post conquered by
Ancient Rome and turned into a military
colony by the emperor Claudius for the
conquest of the kingdoms of Mauretania.
Afterwards it became a municipium called
Colonia Aelia Tipasensis,
The city was an important Christian center
during the last centuries of Roman
domination, with 3 basilicas.
Tipasa was destroyed by the Vandals in
430 AD,
