Nikolai Tcherepnin: Composer Biography

Nikolai Tcherepnin was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor born in 1873 in Saint Petersburg. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Tcherepnin conducted for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and composed several ballets. He taught at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory for many years before moving to Paris in the 1920s after the Bolshevik revolution. Tcherepnin composed operas, ballets, orchestral works, and chamber music during his career.

Life
NikolaiTcherepninwasbornin1873toawellknownandwealthyphysicianofthesamename.TheelderNikolaimovedinelitecirclesofartists
includingFyodorDostoyevskyandModestMussorgsky.YoungNikolai'smotherdiedwhenhewasababy,andwhenhisfatherremarried,was
replacedbyanambivalentstepmother.Asachild,Nikolai'sfatherbeathimregularlyandenforcedageneralcodeofstrictdiscipline.[1]
Athisfather'sinsistence,Nikolaiearnedalawdegree,thoughduringthistimehecomposedsteadily.In1895hegraduatedwithhisdegreeinlaw
fromtheUniversityofSaintPetersburg.In1898,heearnedadegreeincompositionunderNikolaiRimskyKorsakovandadegreeinpianounder
K.K.FanArkh.HistalentsandhighfamilystatusearnedhimajobastheorchestralteacherattheCourtChapelin1899.Forsixyearshetaught
therebeforereturningtotheSt.PetersburgConservatorytoteachthere.Duringhis13yeartenure(from1909onwardasprofessor)hetaught
manynotablestudents,includingSergeiProkofiev,AleksandrGauk,YuriShaporin[2]andLazareSaminsky.[3]
In1902hebecametheregularconductoroftheRussianSymphonyConcertsandlatermadeguestappearanceswiththeRussianMusicalSociety,
theMoscowPhilharmonicSociety,theSilotiConcertsandIvanVasilenkosHistoricConcertsaswellconductingattheMariinskyTheatre(19069).
AmemberoftheBelyayevcircle,hewasalsoinvolvedwiththeKruzhoksovremennoymuzki(TheContemporaryMusicCircle)andworkedwith
theMiriskusstva(WorldofArt)movement.[4]TcherepninwasafriendofthemusicologistAlexanderOssovsky.
In1907,duringhistimeattheConservatory,hewrotepossiblyhismostfamouswork,theballetLePavillond'Armide.Twoyearslater,Tcherepnin
conductedtheballetatthepremiereperformanceofDiaghilev'slegendaryBalletsRusses.Heconductedfortheentirefirstseasonandreturned
toconductmultipletimesoverthenextfiveyears.HeconductedperformanceswiththeBalletsRussesinBerlin,MonteCarlo,Paris,Rome,and
theRoyalOperaHouseatCoventGardeninLondon.[5]InadditiontohisprofessorshipandhiscommitmentswiththeBallet,in1908,hebecame
conductorattheMariinskyTheatre.Atthispost,hedirectedtheParispremiereofNikolaiRimskyKorsakov'soperaTheGoldenCockerel.[6]
From1905to1917,hewasprincipaloftheconservatoryofSt.Petersburg,wherehetaughtconducting.In1918hewasinvitedtotakethepostof
directoroftheNationalConservatoryofTbilisi,thecapitaloftheDemocraticRepublicofGeorgia.FollowingtheBolsheviktakeoverofGeorgiain
1921,hemovedtoParisandlivedtherefortherestofhislife.WhileinFrance,heworkedwithAnnaPavlovaandherballettroupeascomposer
andconductor(19224)andmadeconcerttoursaroundEuropeandtheUnitedStatesbutabandonedhisconcertcareerin1933becauseofa
deteriorationinhishearing.In1925hefoundedtheRussianConservatoryinParisandservedasitsdirectorforanumberofyears(19259and
193845).In1926hebecameamemberoftheboardoftrusteesoftheBelyayevpublishinghouse,wherehelaterbecamepresidentfrom1937
untilhisdeathin1945.[4]
